Kopperud's Hat Trick Powers Dubuque to 7-1 Win

Dubuque scored twice in the first, twice in the second and three times in the third to dominate for a full 60 minutes and skate past Waterloo on Friday night. The Saints received five multi-point performances, including a hat trick from Matthew Kopperud and a three-point effort from Riese Gaber in their 7-1 victory over Waterloo.

-Dubuque was all over the Black Hawks from the beginning of the night, outshooting the Hawks 20-6 in the first period. Kopperud scored both goals for Dubuque, including a crucial tally with 23 seconds left in the period that ended up being the game winner.

-Dubuque kept the pressure on in period two as they scored five minutes into the period on the power play. Antonio Venuto pushed one past Gabriel Carriere on the doorstep. Later in the period, Luke Robinson scored his first of the season and first in the USHL on a slick feed from Riese Gaber.

-The onslaught was paused briefly in the third as Waterloo scored to make it 4-1. However, Kopperud scored shortly after and made the game 5-1 to put things out of reach.

-The hat trick was the first of the season for Dubuque and the first since the 2017-18 season as Dubuque didn't register a hat trick last season at all. Kopperud was all over the ice and snapped a three-game pointless streak in style.

-Gaber, Ty Jackson, Stephen Halliday and Ryan Beck also registered at least two points in the game. Dubuque had points from 11 different players in what was certainly their best win of the season.

-The win over Waterloo at Young arena was the first loss of the season for Waterloo at home. Previously they were 6-0 and outscoring opponents 25-8 on their home ice.

-The six-goal margin of victory for the Saints in Waterloo was the largest margin of defeat for Waterloo at Young arena since the Tier-1 era started. Waterloo had never lost by more than five on home ice, and that has been rare as well.

-The Black Hawks are a much better team then they showed on Friday night, but Dubuque proved that they are a top contender in the league with a dominant win over a top team in arguably the toughest rink in the league.

-Dubuque will be right back at it against the Des Moines tomorrow night as they take on another top team at home. Dubuque beat Des Moines 5-4 the first time out against the Bucs this season.
