
Komets clinch playoffs with seven-point week

Fort Wayne, IN - The Komets completed week 23 with three wins and a shootout loss for seven points and a spot in the 2009 IHL playoffs. The Komets improved to 37-17-3-9 for 86 points and moved within a point of first place Port Huron with three weeks and 10 games remaining in 2008-09.
The defending IHL Turner Cup Champion Komets will be entering their 49th playoff season in the 57-year history of the Fort Wayne franchise. The Komets have qualified for 42 post-seasons in the IHL while earning seven UHL playoff berths.
Week 22 started in dramatic fashion Tuesday with a 2-1 overtime win at Port Huron. Winger Konstantin Shafranov scored the game tying goal with 43 seconds remaining in the third period to send the game into extra time. Shafranov then scored the game winner at 1:17 of the OT period to seal the win and take two points out of McMorran arena. Komet goaltender Nick Boucher backstopped the Komets to victory making 46 saves in the match.
Friday the Komets fell in a shootout 3-2 to the visiting Port Huron Icehawks. Again Boucher came up big making 51 saves on 53 Icehawk shots. David Hukalo and Leo Thomas scored in regulation for the Komets.
Saturday the Komets silenced the Thunder in Bloomington 3-0. It was the first Fort Wayne road shutout since April 5, 2008 when Kevin Reiter stoned the Fury at Muskegon 2-0. Boucher earned his second shutout of the season on 23 saves. Thomas notched the first two goals of the game and Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn added the third mark.
Sunday the Komets completed the home-and-home series with Bloomington with a 4-2 win. Versteeg-Lytwyn, Shafranov, Rick Varone and Brian Boulay hit the net for Fort Wayne while Boucher stopped 20 of 22 Thunder shots and extended his unbeaten streak to seven games while tying his career best of 24 wins in a season.
Looking ahead the Komets will skate three home games this week in four nights starting with the Flint Generals Wednesday night at 7:30. The Generals return for an 8pm faceoff Friday night, their last visit of the season. Going into this week's action the Komets are undefeated (6-0-0-0) by Flint on Coliseum ice this year.
Saturday the Komets will welcome the Port Huron Icehawks back to town for the final time of the regular season at 7:30pm. Port Huron owns a 5-1-0-0 record in six visits to Fort Wayne this season. The Hawks skate at Kalamazoo Wednesday and host Bloomington Friday before traveling to Fort Wayne Saturday.
Sunday the Komets complete week 24 with their final trip to Perani Arena in Flint for a 4pm faceoff. The Komets are 5-1-0-1 in seven visits to Flint so far this season.
Boucher honored for second straight week: Komet netminder Nick Boucher has been named the Southern Sports Supply IHL Goaltender of the Week for the second straight week, and fourth time this season. Boucher appeared in all four games posting a 3-0-0-1 record to extend his unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-0-1). In 245 minutes of play the netminder faced 145 shots allowing only five goals for a 1.22 goals-against average and .966 save percentage. Boucher registered his second shutout of the season during the week ending March 22, stopping all 23 shots at Bloomington for a 3-0 win Saturday. Boucher tied his career best of 24 wins in a season with a 4-2 victory Sunday vs. Bloomington in his fourth straight start. Boucher finished the week leading IHL goalies with an overall 2.51 goals-against average and .918 save percentage in 45 games.
Komet streaks: Komets have a nine game unbeaten streak (8-0-0-1) and a season-high six-game road winning streak.....Leo Thomas has a five-game point streak (4 goals, 3 assists).....Netminder Nick Boucher is riding a seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-0-1) and has started the last four straight games.
Milestones: Guy Dupuis skated his 800th career IHL game Saturday at Bloomington....Brian Boulay appeared in his 100th pro game Friday vs. Port Huron.....P.C. Drouin has scored 99 career Fort Wayne goals.....Rod Aldoff has 99 pro goals.....Nick Boucher tied his career best of 24 wins in a season Sunday vs. Bloomington.
Season Ticket Exchange Night Friday.....Komet season ticket holders can take advantage of another Season Ticket Exchange Night this Friday when the Komets host Flint at 8pm. Unused tickets from previous Komet home games this season can be exchanged at the Coliseum Ticket Office for tickets to Wednesday night's game.
