Macon Trax News Release
[Pelham, Ala.]âThe start of a pivotal three game stretch against Alabama began on the right track. Macon defeated the Slammers in Pelham 3-2 Friday night.
The story of the night for the Trax was goaltender Andy Kollar. Kollar stood tall between the pipes with 39 saves.
Earlier in the day Kollar was named the WHA2 Goalie of the Week for the second time this season. The Winnipeg native made 17 saves alone in the third period despite being briefly knocked out with eight minutes remaining in the game.
The Trax scored first, opened up a two goal lead in the second period and never feel behind against their rivals. Craig Miller opened up the scoring, on his way to a two point night, at the 12:30 of the first period from a Rivard assist.
Alabama tied the game up 12:45 into second period when Chad Peck netted a power play goal. Just two minutes later the Trax returned with a power play goal of their own, when Luke Murphy put a rebound goal past Slammers' goalie Jamie Ronayne.
Just 36 seconds later, Ryan Rivard scored the eventual game winner. David Deeves carried the puck into the zone and found the streaking Rivard who went to the net untouched.
Both teams played a highly physical game and showed why this is the best rivalry in the WHA2. The teams have two more head to head meetings within the next week.
Alabama will host Macon Saturday, Feb. 7 and again Thursday, Feb. 12. With the win tonight the Trax climbed within two points of Alabama for the fourth and final playoff spot.
All Trax games can be heard around the world on www.irn.fm. Pre-game starts fifteen minutes before puck drop with Trax broadcaster Adam Minnick.
