Koehler Strikes out Nine as Z's Take Series Opener

August 12, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Tom Koehler fanned a season-high nine batters, earning his third straight win, and Vinny Rottino went 3-for-5 as the New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Reno Aces, 5-3 on Friday night at Zephyr Field.

Koehler struck out the side in the top of the first, then got three runs from his teammates in the bottom of the inning.

Rottino led off with a single to left, and scored on a Jose Lopez double.

Aces starter Gaby Hernandez gave up a single to Mike Cervenak, and proceeded to force in a pair of runs on bases-loaded walks to put New Orleans ahead 3-0.

Rottino got another Zephyrs rally started in the second inning, leading off with a triple off the left field wall, and scoring on a ground out by Lopez.

Cervenak singled, and Chris Aguila drove him home as the Z's grabbed a 5-0 advantage.

Reno got on the board in the fourth when Koehler walked Evan Frey and Andy Tracy, before giving up his first hit of the game to Cole Gillespie, who singled to left to score Frey.

Tracy, who hit 23 home runs for the Zephyrs in 2007, belted a pair of solo shots in the sixth and eighth innings, bringing Reno to within 5-3, but that is all the Z's would allow as the bullpen combined to pitch three innings, giving up one run on two hits while fanning four.

Koehler (9-6) pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out nine. Koehler recorded his third straight quality start.

Sandy Rosario got the save by sitting down the Aces in order in the ninth. It was Rosario's second save in as many appearances with New Orleans.

Hernandez (4-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

The Zephyrs return to action on Saturday night at 6 p.m. for the second of the four-game series against the Reno Aces. Chris Sampson looks to improve to 8-0 as he takes on Reno's Wade Miley (3-1).
