Knights spoil season finale at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park

Durham, NC - Fans that chose to spend the afternoon at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Monday didn't get to see a Bulls' win, but the day was certainly a victory.
Almost 600 people purchased a ticket today for the Bulls home finale against the Charlotte Knights resulting in a $2000 donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The money will go to help the people in areas affected by the wrath of Hurricane Katrina. The Bulls also partnered with ConAgra to provide several cases of food to the cause.
"A win would have been nice," Bulls General Manager Mike Birling said, "but the fans made us all feel like winners with their support of this cause."
The Richmond Braves snapped a two-game losing streak to the Durham Bulls, defeating the home team, 4-3. Richmond improves to 52-85 on the season while Durham, who finished up their 2005 home schedule today, falls to 60-77.
The Bulls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run home run by designated hitter Josh Phelps, his 14th homer of the season. Richmond tied the game in the fourth on an RBI-single by right fielder Scott Pratt and third baseman Andy Marte scored on a fielder's choice. The Braves took a 4-2 lead in the seventh on an RBI-single by second baseman Jonathan Schuerholz and an RBI-double by centerfielder Kerry Robinson.
Durham scored a run in the ninth to make it a one-run game but that was as close as the Bulls would get. First baseman Eric Munson scored when catcher Tim Laker grounded into a force out at second before Braves reliever Jason Childers got left fielder Paul Hoover to ground out into a game-ending double play.
Braves starter Kevin Barry (5-3) picked up his fifth win of the season, holding the Bulls to two runs on two hits in 6.0 innings of work. Durham starter Dewon Brazelton (1-2) suffered his second loss of the year, allowing four runs (two unearned) on six hits in 6.1 innings pitched. Childers worked the ninth to earn his 13th save of the season for the Braves.

Notes...The Bulls finished the season with a record paid attendance of 520,371, breaking the old record of 505,314 set in 2001. It was the third time in the team's 103-year history that the paid attendance was over 500,000.
