Gwinnett Stripers News Release

TODAY'S GAME: The fourth of a four game series. The Bulls have won two of three. The 16th of 16 meetings with the Bulls and the eighth of eight at Athletic Park. The Braves are 8-7 vs. the Bulls, 4-3 at Durham. The Braves were 3-3 vs. the Bulls in Durham last season. Game eight of an eight game road trip (Braves are 4-3) The Braves are 17-23 vs. the IL South, 10-12 on the road. The Braves are fourth in the South, five games behind Charlotte. Durham is second in the South, 14 games out of first. Richmond is 58-71 all-time vs. the Bulls.

LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Braves lost 5-1 to the Bulls in Durham last night. The Bulls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a home run by Delmon Young. Durham opened up a 2-0 lead in the fifth on a Luis Ordaz sacrifice fly. Durham blew the game open with a three run seventh inning. Ordaz doubled two runs home and scored on a Darnell McDonald double. Richmond avoided a shutout with a run in the ninth on an RBI single by Jason Bouregois. Jason Hammel earned the win. Adam Bernero took the loss. McDonald had three hits for the Bulls. Ordaz knocked in three runs. Josh Arteaga and J.C. Boscan had two hits each for the Braves.

ARMS RACE: The five current members of the Braves starting pitching rotation (Kevin Barry, Kyle Davies, Adam Bernero, Chuck James, and Anthony Lerew) have allowed just 19 earned runs in their last 97.2 innings (15 starts, 16 games) for a 1.75 ERA. Richmond is 10-6 over that stretch. The last time any of the current starters allowed more than three runs and did not go at least five innings was 8/11 (Lerew vs. Charlotte). The Braves went 13 straight games without allowing a first inning run prior to yesterday.

NOTABLE NUMBERS: Brayan Pena has 305 plate appearances. He is 61 short of qualifying for the IL's batting race. With a .325 batting average he would be third in the league in hitting. Pena is hitting .492 (32-65) vs. left-handed pitchers. Richmond is last in the IL in batting average, runs scored, home runs, strikeouts by pitchers, and walks issued. James Jurries has hits in four straight games (5-15 .333). John Barnes has hits in three straight (4-9 .444). Barnes, now on the DL, Jurries, and Esix Snead have missed the series with Durham thus far due to injuries. Snead leads the IL in stolen bases. Snead's 46 stolen bases are tied for seventh best in R-Braves history. Only three R-Braves (Ed Miller, Ralph Garr, and Albert Hall) have stolen more than 50 in a season. Snead is trying to become the third player in IL history to lead the league in steals three straight years. The other two also played in Richmond (Len Johnston of the Virginians who did it 1956-58 and former R-Brave Ed Miller who did it 1978-80). Kerry Robinson led the Pacific Coast League in stolen bases when he joined the Braves June 22. Robinson's combined 37 steals is fifth best in Triple-A. Jason Bourgeois has hits in seven straight games (8-27.296). Jason Childers has allowed just one earned run in his last 15 innings. Scott Pratt has hits in four straight games (7-17 .412). Josh Arteaga (5-14 .357) and J.C. Boscan (4-14 .286) have hits in three straight games.

THE ROSTER: The Braves roster is now 24 (12 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders, and three outfielders; four players are on the DL). The Braves have made 119 roster moves this season and lost 382 man-games to the disabled list. The Braves have used a total of 52 players this season.
