Charlotte Knights News Release

(Norfolk, VA) - The Charlotte Knights had a chance to sweep the Norfolk Tides with a win on Sunday. After getting off to a slow start in the finale, the bats came barreling back, but in the end, an eighth-straight win was not in the cards.

Ryan Flaherty homered off reliever Deunte Heath (4-3, 1.45) in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the Norfolk Tides avoided a two-game series sweep with a 5-4 win over the Knights on Sunday from Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA. The loss snapped a season-high eight-game win-streak and kept Charlotte's magic number at five games.

RHP Scott Carroll started for the Knights and allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings. Carroll allowed one walk, struck-out three, and earned a no-decision.

Norfolk got on the scoreboard first, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Two innings later, the Tides tacked on two more runs to go up by a score of 4-0. Still, Charlotte would battle back.

A Dan Johnson sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning gave Charlotte (76-54) their first run of the game. The Knights scored one more in the seventh and then tied the game in the eighth inning with a two-spot against Norfolk reliever Brian Matusz.

With the game now tied at four, Flaherty became the hero after launching the first pitch he saw from Heath over the right field fence. Zach Phillips (2-2, 3.38) recorded the final three outs in the ninth inning to earn his second win of the year.

In the loss, Knights outfielder Jordan Danks kept his hit-streak and on-base streak alive. Danks extended his hit-streak to nine-straight games and his on-base streak to 29-straight games with a single in the third inning.

The Knights will now make the trip to Durham to face the Bulls for a quick two-game series beginning on Monday. RHP Charlie Shirek will get the ball for the Knights in the opener. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
