Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Rochester, NY - Corban Joseph drove home a season high four runs with a pair of two RBI singles and starter John Maine picked up the win with six shutout innings as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees shutout the Rochester Red Wings 6-0 in the series finale between the two teams at Frontier Field.

P.J. Walters got the start for the Red Wings making his sixth rehab start for the Minnesota Twins since getting placed on the DL on June 14th. The right hander looked good in his three innings striking out six Yankees and not allowing a run.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's fortunes changed in the fourth inning with the new Rochester pitcher Jeff Manship entering the game. The Yankees picked up six runs off the right hander in his two and 1/3 innings of work before he was taken out of the game in the top of the sixth inning.

Joseph continued his tear in the two game series picking up a season high four RBI's on a pair of two RBI singles. The first came in the fourth inning with SWB up 1-0 on Melky Mesa's RBI double that scored Francisco Cervelli, who led the inning off with a walk. With one out and the bases loaded, Joseph singled through the right side of the infield scoring Mesa and Kosuke Fukudome for a 3-0 Yankees lead.

Manship settled down and set the side down in order in the fifth inning before running into trouble again in the sixth. The Yankees loaded the bases with one out on three straight Manship walks and set up Joseph for another RBI opportunity. The SWB second baseman came through again with his second two run single, this time to centerfield scoring Fukudome and Ramiro Pena for a 5-0 lead. Darnell McDonald who had gone first to third on the Joseph hit scored on a sacrifice fly from Eduardo Nunez to push the lead to 6-0.

While Manship struggled, Maine excelled. The right hander who had allowed 18 earned runs over his first three starts in August blanked the Red Wings over six innings and picked up the win to improve to 6-5 on the year. Maine allowed four hits with two walks and a hit batsman while striking out six on the night.

The Yankees got great bullpen work again as Lee Hyde (one inning) and Chase Whitley (two innings) followed up Maine's start to shut down the Red Wings the rest of the way for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's ninth shutout win of the season. SWB's "Magic Number" to clinch the IL North Division title for the fifth time in the last six seasons was reduced to 11 with the win.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre opens up five straight days in Buffalo with a two game "home" series that starts on Monday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch from Coca-Cola Field. Right hander Ramon Ortiz (11-5, 3.16 ERA) gets the start for the Yankees with right hander Chris Schwinden (7-8, 2.99 ERA) getting the start for the Bisons.
