Knights and RailRiders Split Wednesday's Doubleheader

(Moosic, PA) - The Charlotte Knights and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders completed their four-game series on Wednesday with a doubleheader from PNC Field in Moosic, PA. The Knights dropped game one by a score of 7-2, but battled back to win the second game by a score of 5-1. The win was Charlotte's third in four games -- giving the club a series win over the RailRiders from Moosic. The two teams will meet at BB&T Ballpark from July 17-20.

Charlotte once again used the long ball on Wednesday -- hitting two home runs in game one and getting a home run in game two en route to their 38th win of the season. Andy Wilkins and Miguel Gonzalez both homered in game one, while it was Matt Davidson who homered in game two. For the season, the Knights lead the International League in home runs with 109. As for Wilkins and Davidson, they both hit their 16th home runs of the season. They lead the Knights and are now second in the IL behind Dan Johnson, who has 17.

RHP Dylan Axelrod (6-7, 4.50) notched his team-high sixth win of the season after allowing just one run over five innings in game two. Reliever Taylor Thompson was sharp over the final two innings to shut the door on Charlotte's fifth win in July. SWB starter Matt Tracy (0-2, 3.12) gave up two runs (one earned) over 4.1 innings in game two and was saddled with the loss.

RHP Erik Johnson (2-6, 6.81) started for the Knights in game one and went the distance. Johnson allowed seven runs on 14 hits over six innings and was charged with the loss. RailRiders starter Chris Leroux (2-2, 4.44) -- a product of nearby Winthrop University -- beat the Knights after giving up just two runs on eight hits. He also went the distance -- pitching a seven-inning complete game.

Overall, the Knights had 20 hits combined on the day between the two games. Wilkins and Matt Tuiasosopo had three hits each in game two. Marcus Semien led the way with three RBIs in the second game. It was his third three-RBI game over his last five games.

The Knights will now return home and open a four-game homestand on Thursday against the Syracuse Chiefs. RHP Shawn Hill (3-3, 4.83) gets the nod for the Knights in Thursday's opener. Hill and the Knights will face Syracuse RHP Blake Treinen (4-0, 2.20).

Thursday is Italian Night at the ballpark and it's also Thirsty Thursday (tm) presented by Hickory Tavern. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:05 p.m. game.
