Knighthawks' Youth Keeps Campbell Feeling Young
May 2, 2012 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release
Scott Campbell is now in his eighth season in the NLL and many who follow the game would consider him a veteran. Yet, this same sentiment is not always shared by Campbell. When asked if he viewed himself as a leader on the team, his initial reaction was to question his veteran status.
"I don't like to think of myself as one of the older players in the league, but I guess I'm getting up there," said the 30-year-old Campbell.
However, with 10 players on the roster having played less than two full seasons in the NLL, he clearly represents a voice of experience in the locker room. That doesn't stop him from being a self-proclaimed "class clown" though.
Campbell is the type of locker room presence that keeps the mood light, and he enjoys joking around with the younger guys and keeping up on what is going on in their busy lives. This fun-loving nature is something that he believes keeps him feeling young.
On the field, Campbell is a completely different style of player. When the ball drops at midfield, it is all business. Campbell plays defense, but also often finds himself involved in the transition game, making him one of the more versatile talents on the roster. He describes his play style as adaptive.
"I might not be the best at one thing, but I am good at all of them," he said.
On one end of the field, he is a hard-nosed defender who doesn't mind mixing it up with opposing attackers, and is among the team leaders in forced turnovers and loose balls. On the other, he can be an offensive spark in the transition game where he is able to contribute some scoring as well. Campbell ranks second on the team in points by defenders, contributing six points (1+5) in 13 games this season.
Campbell is a defender by trade, as he grew up playing defense in Canada as part of Major Series Lacrosse, but he credits his college career at Elmira for helping his offensive game evolve. At Elmira College, Campbell played midfield while gaining his first experience playing field lacrosse. The dual purpose role of midfield players in the outdoor game helped his transition game to grow and allowed his skill on offense to develop.
Although he has built a career around lacrosse, the game is not the only sport that Campbell enjoys playing. Growing up, he played soccer in the summer and hockey in the winter, before lacrosse ever entered the picture. He left soccer behind in his youth, as he desired a physical style of play year round and thus he turned to lacrosse.
Hockey was something he continued to play through his days at Elmira, as he was a member of the Golden Eagles hockey team as well. After college the choice between lacrosse and hockey was fairly easy for him though.
As he put it, "I wasn't very good at hockey. There was no after college."
Campbell's sports focus is now entirely centered on lacrosse, but that sure does not prevent him from playing a round of golf with friends when he desires.
