Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, February 2)... Rochester Knighthawks forward Shawn Evans was named to the Team Canada roster for the 2011 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championships. Evans is the third Knighthawk named to Team Canada, as he will join Jordan Hall and Matt Vinc for the tournament held in Prague from May 21-28.
"I'm very happy and excited to represent my country with a very talented group of guys," said Evans. "I'm ready to work hard and help out anyway I can."
Evans was selected to the team along with forwards Jeff Zywicki and Stephan Leblanc. It will be the first indoor world championships for the Peterborough, Ontario, native.
"Shawn is a tough young player who has embraced the role of a feeder," said Team Canada and Knighthawks Assistant Coach Paul Day. "He's a fearless competitor."
Evans is in his sixth season with the Knighthawks and is fourth all-time in penalty minutes (265) and seven all-time in points (305). The 24 year old is coming off a career season in Major Series Lacrosse. In the summer, he helped his hometown Peterborough Lakers win the 2010 Mann Cup, which was the third of his career. During the regular season, he won the Bucko McDonald Award as the MSL's leading scorer. He capped off his dream season with the Lakers by winning the Mann Cup and the Mike Kelly Award as the Mann Cup MVP.
Evans led the Mann Cup with a record-tying 37 points and smashed Josh Sanderson's assist record of 26 set in 2002 as he recorded 32 in just six games. Evans also holds the distinction of being the only player to have won national junior and senior titles and the NLL championship within 12 months from 2006 to 2007.
Evans and the Knighthawks will host the Philadelphia Wings on Saturday, February 2nd in a 2:05 p.m. game at The Blue Cross Arena. The first 5,000 fans will receive Silly Bandz, courtesy of Time Warner Cable. The game will be broadcast live on The Zone 94.1 FM and www.thezone941.com.
