Knighthawks' McCready Named An All-Star Captain
February 23, 2011 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, February 23)... If it was a shock for Pat McCready to be named to the National Lacrosse League All-Star Game, imagine the feeling he is having today after being named one of the East Division's alternate captains
The Rochester Knighthawks defenseman will join John Tavares of the Buffalo Bandits and Colin Doyle of the Toronto Rock as one of the captains for the East at the 2011 All-Star Game, presented by the Oneida Indian Nation, on Sunday, February 27th at 2:00 p.m. Tavares will serve as captain of the East All-Stars, while Doyle and McCready will serve as the alternates.
Rochester will send a quartet of players to the game, which also includes Sid Smith, and forwards Shawn Evans and Cody Jamieson. The game will take place at the Event Center at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, NY. The game will be televised live on VERSUS. Go to NLL.com for ticket information.
McCready is in his 16th season in the NLL and sixth season with the Knighthawks. The 36 year old is the team's lone starter in the game. He will make his second All-Star appearance and first as a captain. In typical McCready style, he was very humbled by the honor.
"I am even more humbled. I hope they just didn't pick all the old guys," said McCready with a laugh. "I will try to represent Rochester the best that I can."
The St. Catharines, Ontario, native has had a very distinguished career, which has included two NLL titles, 1997 with Rochester and 2008 with Buffalo. In his career, he has 360 points (135+225) and 1,449 loose balls in 196 games. In league history, he is fourth all-time in loose balls and third in penalty minutes (419). This season, he has five goals and seven assists at the midway point and is on pace to reach double digits in goals for the first time since the 2006 season. His 12 points leads all league defensemen and his 54 loose balls are second on the Knighthawks. Despite his impressive play, he was still surprised with his second All-Star nod.
"It's a great honor. Anyone from the 'D' end could have gone," he said. "It's a great thing to go and I will be happy to be there."
McCready returned to the Knighthawks this offseason after helping the Toronto Rock reach the Finals last season. The defenseman played five seasons in Rochester (1997-01), and recorded 42 goals, 66 assists, 253 loose balls and 115 penalty minutes in 51 games. He arrived in Rochester after leading the Charlotte Cobras in scoring in 1996. McCready's career has also taken him to Buffalo, where he landed after a blockbuster seven-player deal between Rochester and Buffalo in 2002. He would play for the Bandits for eight seasons and he made his NLL All-Star debut in 2007.
This offseason, he considered retiring but changed his mind to play with his nephew Joel and the Knighthawks. McCready is glad he made the right decision.
"I was pretty close (to retiring). I thought I was done, but the opportunity was there to come to Rochester and play with Joel," said McCready. "I am pumped that I get to play with him. I feel young again and am having a lot of fun playing lacrosse."
