Calgary Roughnecks News Release
Calgary, AB (Tuesday, November 15, 2005) - All Star defender Rob Kirkby is now officially back in the fold of the National Lacrosse League's Calgary Roughnecks.
"I'm excited to announce that Rob today signed a one-year deal," said Roughnecks General Manager Kurt Silcott.
"He was a big part of the team that won the Champion's Cup in 2004 and I look forward to him taking the floor with us again in 2006."
Soon after the 2004 Champion's Cup victory, Kirkby was traded to Arizona for Travis Gillespie and Kyle Neufeld.
Ironically, due to injury neither Kirkby or Neufeld dressed for their new clubs in 2005.
But this fall, Kirkby returned to Calgary in exchange for a first round draft pick in the NLL's 2006 entry draft.
"Rob is an All Star and undoubtedly one of the top defenders in the league," said Silcott. "His presence will only make us a stronger team."
Kirkby, 6 ft. 3 in. and 200 lbs, is 26-years-old. He was originally obtained by the Riggers in 2002 when he came to Calgary, along with a first round pick in the 2003 NLL entry draft, from New York in exchange for Ben Prepchuk and J. D. Smithson.
The Roughnecks today also inked a one-year deal with youngster Louis Alfred.
"Louis is a talented scorer who will battle with our current lefties for a spot on offence," said Silcott. "He's got all the tools. We just need to see if he can play at the elite level."
This summer, Alfred played for Senior B Kahnawake in the President's Cup. Though his team lost in the semi-finals, Alfred was named to the tournament's First All Star team. In three games, he registered 17 points (6g, 11a).
