Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Knighthawks General Manager Jody Gage announced today that the team has signed 2005 first-round draft pick Shawn Evans to a two-year deal. The contract is pending league approval.
The K-Hawks selected the Peterborough Lakers with the second overall pick in the 2005 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. Shawn Evans joins his brother Scott, who was a first-round pick in 2003, as a member of the Knighthawks.
This season, Evans led the Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior "A" league with 47 goals and was second in points with 93 (47+46) in 22 games for Peterborough. With the senior Peterborough team, he recorded one goal and one assist in one game. Further, Shawn (5-9, 170 pounds) played in the OLA Senior "A" Finals with the Lakers. In 2004, he won a Mann Cup with the Lakers after being called up from the junior team.
Evans also played one season of college lacrosse at Bellarmine University. In 2005, he recorded 52 goals and 23 assists for 75 points in 15 games for the 13-2 Knights. Bellarmine played as a provisional Division I program last season.
Rochester obtained the pick on August 9th in a four-player, one draft pick deal with the Edmonton Rush. In the trade, the K-Hawks acquired the second overall pick in the draft and defenseman Sandy Chapman in exchange for defensemen Andrew Turner, Cam Bergman and Buck Stobart. The No. 2 pick was the highest Rochester selection since John Grant was tabbed first overall in the 2000 draft.
Rochester continues its training camp this weekend on Saturday, November 19th at All Star Sports Arena in Irondequoit, NY. The session will run from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the facility at 557 East Ridge Road. The practice is free and open to the public. Players and coaches will be available for autographs following the workouts.
