Kinston Indians News Release
The Indians finally broke through at the new BB&T Ballpark with an 8-1 win over Winston-Salem on Tuesday night. Kinston starter T.J. McFarland picked up his Carolina League leading 10th win of the season, as the K-Tribe belted out 13 hits on the night.
McFarland looked great, giving up just four hits and one earned run in six innings of work. McFarland (10-2) walked four and struck out three. Winston-Salem starter Nate Jones was also solid earlier, shutting down Kinston through the first three innings.
Kinston would break a scoreless tie in the fourth. The frame started with a Bo Greenwell single. After an Abner Abreu walk, Chun Chen grounded into a double play. Kyle Bellows then belted a two-out single to score Greenwell and put Kinston on the board. With Kinston up 1-0 going into the seventh inning, Doug Pickens belted a home run to left field. Pickens fifth homer of the season made it to the concourse in left center field, giving Kinston a 2-0 lead. Winston-Salem would tighten the game up with an RBI hit from Luis Sierra in the eighth inning. With the tying run at third, Chris Jones would then come in from the pen and get the final two outs of the inning. Jones then pitched a scoreless eighth, going 1 2/3 and giving up just one hit. Matt Langwell would pitch the final 1 1/3 for his third save of the season.
Kinston would get some breathing room in the top of the eighth inning when Jeremy Tice delivered a two-out, two RBI double. The extra base hit scored Abreu and Juan Diaz who walked earlier in the inning. The Indians added four runs in the ninth inning thanks to three more two-out, RBI hits. Chen, Bellows and Diaz did the damage. Bellows ninth inning triple drove in two runs as he went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI. Diaz, Tice and Pickens each had two hits for Kinston.
The K-Tribe will turn around and try to take the series Wednesday afternoon with an early noon start in the Triad. Joey Mahalic will take the mound for Kinston.
