Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Kinston, NC- Matt McBride went 2-4 with two RBI, including a run-scoring double in the seventh inning that broke a 2-2 tie and gave Kinston a 3-2 win over Salem on Tuesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. The Red Sox, who went 0-12 with runners in scoring position, were limited to just three hits and suffered their third one-run lost in the last four games. Mike Pontius picked up the victory in relief for Kinston, while Salem's Ryne Miller endured his first loss of the season despite two and a third solid innings.
Luis Exposito jacked a two-out, two-run bomb in the fourth inning to even the score at two. It was Exposito's second homer of the season, and it represented the entirety of Salem's scoring for the evening. Late in the game, the Red Sox had the leadoff runners on base in the sixth, seventh, and eighth. Each time, however, they were stranded.
Salem starter Jose Capellan struggled early in the game, but was able to minimize the damage to one in the first and one in the second for Kinston. Capellan yielded eight hits and four walks over four and two-thirds innings, but just gave up two runs to keep the Sox in the game. The Dominican lefty was aided by four double plays created by the Red Sox defense.
Mike Jones saw his ten game hit streak end with an 0-3 performance. Jones cracked a deep drive to right-center in the top of the eighth, but Indians right-fielder Matt Brown made a superhuman catch reaching up by the wall to rob Jones of, not only a hit, but also the game-tying RBI.
Tim Fedroff went 3-4 for Kinston at the top of the order, driving in a run and scoring a run in the Indian triumph. Dallas Cawiezell pitched a perfect ninth for his first save of the season.
The Red Sox and Indians resume the series at 11AM on Wednesday morning, with Salem's Seth Garrison opposing Kinston's Ryan Morris.
