Kings Get 1st Road Win

The Kalamzoo Kings (9-15) came out hungry for the win on Friday night at Hawkinson Ford Field as they made a come from behind effort to defeat the Cook County Cheetahs (10-11) 7-5 and claim their first road victory of the season.

The Kings got behind early, as the Cheetahs scored 4 runs, all coming with 2 outs, in the bottom of the 3rd inning. But the Kings countered in the top of the 4th, scoring 4 runs of their own. Center fielder Darryl Blaze singled to start off the inning and catcher Mark Morris reached on an error. With one out, designated hitter Tory Haven singled to score Blaze, first baseman Steve Hindman singled to score Walt Simmons (pinch running for Morris) and short stop Delvin Haskell doubled to drive in Haven. Hindman scored on a sacrafice fly by second baseman Tino Burgos to tie the score at 4-4.

Cook County added another run in the bottom of the 5th to go ahead 5-4, but the Kings came back in the top of the 8th to spoil the Cheetahs late inning lead. Right fielder Brian Ferreira lead off with a double and Blaze advanced him to 3rd on a bunt single. Left fielder Chris Carter singled to right to score Ferreira and Blaze scored the go ahead run on a fielder's choice off the bat of Hindman. The Kings added an insurance run in the top of the 9th on a sacrafice fly off the bat of Simmons.

Kings starter Dan D'Amato pitched 6 innings, giving up 4 runs and striking out 3, before giving way to reliever Lee Naplin. Naplin struck out 5 and surrendered no hits to pick up the win, improving his record to 2-0.

The Kings will try to extend their win streak against the Kenosha Mammoths Saturday night at Simmons Field. The game begins at 7:05 p.m. central time (8:05 p.m. eastern) You can tune into the game on the Sports Station, AM 1660 WQSN, or listen live on the Internet at www.wqsn.com.
