Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings brought their power bats and power arms back home Saturday night, wowing a near-capacity crowd with three home runs en route to an 8-3 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. James Jones, Vinnie Catricala and Matt Cerione all lifted two-run homers in support of right-hander Tom Wilhelmsen's six innings.
Jones opened the game with a two-run jack to the Lumber Lounge in right, his 10th home run of the season. That homer ensured the LumberKings would never trail in the game.
Wisconsin still made it close as Cutter Dykstra flipped a two-run single into the gap in right-center in the fourth to score a pair of unearned runs to Wilhelmsen. Luis Nunez would put the Kings back up by two with an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth, but the Rattlers answered again on an RBI double by Scooter Gennett, scoring D'Vontrey Richardson to cut the lead to 4-3.
Catricala's towering drive over the picnic pavilion in left extended the lead to 6-3 in the fifth and ended the night of Rattlers' right-hander Damon Krestalude. Krestalude (L, 2-8) surrendered six runs on seven hits - including two home runs - over 4.0 innings.
Cerione put the game out of reach with a two-run drive to the Lumber Lounge in the seventh, his fourth homer in the last eight games and his seventh of the season. That blast came off Rattlers' left-hander Efrain Nieves, who walked three and struck out three over 3.0 innings.
Wilhelmsen (W, 2-0) exited after 6.0 innings with three runs - one earned - on four hits, three walks and seven strikeouts. Right-hander Daniel Cooper (S, 1) pitched scoreless baseball over the final 3.0 innings for his first save of the year.
Nunez (3-for-5, run, 2 RBI), Jones (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI), Catricala (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Cerione (1-for-1, HR, 2 RBI) all had multi-RBI games for the LumberKings, who have now won six-straight games and eight of the last nine. The win coupled with a Beloit loss puts Clinton 1.5 games ahead of the Snappers for the West Division Wild Card spot.
Gennett finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Dykstra 2-for-4 with two RBI in the loss for Wisconsin, their third-straight.
The LumberKings (22-18) continue the four-game series with Wisconsin (18-23) tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM. Right-hander Taylor Stanton (8-5, 4.03) will make his 19th start of the season for Clinton. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
