South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks broke through late Saturday evening, scoring two in the eighth inning for a 2-0 victory over the Lake County Captains at Coveleski Stadium. The team combined for its sixth shut out of the season in the opener of a four-game series with the Captains.

With one away in the eighth, David Nick reached on an infield single off Clayton Cook (LP, 5-7) and advanced to second on a throwing error by the catcher Dwight Childs. After Bobby Borchering struck out, the Captains elected to intentionally walk Matt Davidson and take their chances with Ramon Castillo. Castillo made them pay, singling to plate Nick and put the Silver Hawks up for good. David Narodowski later walked with the bases loaded to give South Bend a 2-0 lead it wouldn't relinquish.

While the South Bend offense struggled early, starter Andrew Wolcott (ND) pitched a great game to keep the Silver Hawks in it. Wolcott tossed 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing only three hits while walking two and striking out four. Lake County's best chance against the tall righty came in the first, when they had runners reach second and third before Wolcott induced an inning ending ground out.

Brian Budrow (WP, 4-2) relieved Wolcott with 2.0 scoreless innings, and struck out the side in the ninth for the victory. The Captains loaded the bases in the final frame before Budrow struck out Ben Carlson for South Bend's fourth victory in its last six games.

Cook (LP, 5-7) was impressive as well for Lake County, pitching 7.2 innings before exiting after allowing the game's first run in the eighth. The Silver Hawks didn't record their first hit until the fourth inning and only had two entering the eighth.

Keon Broxton went 0-for-4 on the evening, ending his season-high eight game hitting streak.

The Silver Hawks continue the three-game series with the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians) on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM. RHP Scottie Allen (3-4, 5.64 ERA) will throw for South Bend while Bowling Green sends LHP Vidal Nuno (5-4, 5.20 ERA) to the bump. Pregame coverage begins at 1:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
