Manchester Monarchs News Release

MANCHESTER, NH - The Los Angeles Kings, the parent club of the Manchester Monarchs, on Friday agreed to terms on a one-year contract with defenseman Mike Weaver. The club also agreed to terms on a two-year contract with right wing Brad Smyth. As per team policy, terms of the agreements were not announced. Weaver, 26, played in one game (zero points or penalty minutes) for the Atlanta Thrashers this past season. He also played in 78 regular season games for the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, recording 17 points (3-14=17) and 89 penalty minutes. In addition, Weaver played in nine playoff games for the Wolves and recorded four points (2-2=4) and 20 penalty minutes.

The 5-foot-9, 185-pound native of Brampton, Ontario, has played in 57 career NHL regular season games, all with the Thrashers, and has six points (all assists) and 20 penalty minutes. Weaver played college hockey at Michigan State, where he was a four-year standout.

Smyth, 30, played in 48 regular season games this past season for Karpat of the Finnish Elite League and recorded 38 points (20-18=38) and 85 penalty minutes. He also played in 15 playoff games for Karpat, recording eight points (3-5=8) and four penalty minutes.

Smyth most recently played in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators during the 2002-03 season, when he recorded four points (3-1=4) and 15 penalty minutes in 12 games. During the 1996-97 season, Smyth played in 44 games for the Kings, registering 16 points (8-8=16) and 74 penalty minutes. He also played in nine games for the Kings during the 1997-98 season, when he had four points (1-3=4) and four penalty minutes.

Acquired by the Kings from the Florida Panthers on November 26, 1996, for a third-round selection in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Smyth, a 6-foot, 200-pound native of Ottawa, was later traded by the Kings to the New York Rangers for future considerations on November 14, 1997. In 88 career NHL regular season games with the Senators, Rangers, Nashville Predators, Kings and Panthers, Smyth has 28 points (15-13=28) and 109 penalty minutes.

The NHL's future stars will all converge on Manchester on February 13-14, 2005, as the Manchester Monarchs host the 2005 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic at the Verizon Wireless Arena. At this time, the only way you can ensure yourself a ticket to this marquee event is to purchase one of the Monarchs three Season Ticket Packages. Tickets to the 2005 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic will go on sale to the general public this fall.
