Kenosha Kingfish News Release
Kenosha, Wis. - The Kingfish embarked on their longest road trip of the season this morning, kicking off a six game stretch away from Kenosha. They got things started off on the right foot with a 6-3 victory against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.
The Kingfish (18-5) were pushed to victory, once again, by top notch pitching. Dillon Mazzoccoli took the mound for his first start of the year and pitched four innings while giving up three runs off of four hits. The bullpen came in and finished the deal. First Ryan Orr came in to relieve and pitched 1.2 IP while only surrendering one hit and one walk while striking out three. JD Nielsen made his second appearance, also lasting 1.2 IP while allowing one hit, one walk, and zero runs himself en route to his second victory. JR Holloway got the last two outs of the eighth inning before Brett Shimanovsky collected his third save in the ninth.
The Kingfish bats gave the pitching staff the support it needed to get the win. Jason Scholl set things in motion with a solo shot to right field in the second inning to take a one to nothing lead. That 1-0 lead would not hold up as, by the start of the fifth frame, the Kingfish were trailing 2-1. Brody Westmoreland kept his hot bat alive, picking up his seventh RBI in just his sixth game since joining the Kingfish, as he tripled home Bobby Sheppard in the fifth. Zach Weigel drove in Westmoreland moments later with a sacrifice fly, and the Kingfish led 3-2.
By the time the eighth inning rolled around, the score was tied at three. Alex Dunlap picked the perfect time to pick up his first hit of the year as he knocked in two runs with a 2 out, 2 RBI single to push the Kingfish ahead 5-3. Weigel plated a third insurance run in the ninth to give the Kingfish a three run lead, which they would not yield.
The win is the fifth consecutive for the Kingfish and the thirteenth in their last fourteen games played. Manager Duffy Dyer credits the success to the fantastic pitching and the depth of the lineup, citing the fact that several of those victories came without some of the bigger names in the order. The Kingfish will try to keep their streak alive tomorrow evening when they take on the Rafters at Witter Field again, with a first pitch coming at 7:05 CDT.
