Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - The Waterloo Black Hawks have officially welcomed new Equipment Manager Chris Kiefer to the organization as the team makes final preparations for the 2023 United States Hockey League preseason.

Kiefer steps into responsibilities previously overseen by Spenser Popinga, who will remain with the Hawks as the team's strength and conditioning coach. Kiefer formerly was an assistant equipment manager for the Minnesota Gophers men's hockey team. In 2022/23, he served the program as Minnesota won the Big Ten regular season championship, then advanced to the NCAA National Championship Game in April.

"We are fortunate that Spenser and Chris will be able to work together and make this a seamless transition," said Waterloo General Manager Bryn Chyzyk. "Chris learned the ropes within one of the premier college hockey programs, and we are very pleased that he will be taking his next step here in Waterloo."

"I would like to thank the Black Hawks; it is exciting to have this opportunity," said Kiefer. "I look forward to getting started and learning more about all that it takes to help a USHL team be successful while putting our players in position reach their full potential."

Concurrent with his efforts on behalf of the Gophers, Kiefer was also a University of Minnesota student. He graduated in May with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering.

Kiefer was a hockey player himself growing up in the western suburbs of Chicago. He played as both a forward and a defenseman at the high school level for the Waubonsie Warriors.

Waterloo's first preseason game will be September 8th on neutral ice in Omaha against the Fargo Force. The regular season begins two weeks later during the 2023 Dick's Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic - also versus Fargo - while the first home game at Young Arena in 2023/24 will be against the Omaha Lancers on Saturday, October 14th. Tickets for all Black Hawks home games are currently available by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or online from tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
