Richmond Kickers News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Kickers picked up three points over the Wilmington Hammerheads with a 2-0 win in front of a crowd of 2,924 Saturday night. The first half remained scoreless with the Kickers breaking the nil-nil stalemate in the 52nd minute on a goal by forward David Bulow. Kickers forward Robert Ssejjemba doubled the score in the 78th minute to close out the night.

Neither team created many chances to open tonight's match. Wilmington was the first to open fire in the 21st and 22nd minutes when Midlothian, VA native Ross MacKenzie sent a left-footed shot, just inside the box followed by a strike from the penalty area by forward Jamie Hughes, both easily stopped by Kickers goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale. The Hammerheads continued to apply pressure in the 29th minute when MacKenzie chipped the ball across the goal, inside the penalty area to Hughes who one-timed a strike wide right.

The Kickers broke the ice in the 52nd minute when defender Evan Harding lobbed the ball over Hammerheads defenders, bouncing once beside Bulow. Pressured by defenders, Bulow managed to chip the ball just out of reach of Wilmington goalkeeper Tyler Kettering, dipping the ball under the crossbar.

Looking for revenge in the 67th minute, Wilmington defender Kieran Wilson sent a cross into the box, finding forward Jamie Hughes inside the box. Hughes' diving header at the six-yard spot was forced wide by Pascale.

Kickers forward Robert Ssejjemba registered the final tally of the night in the 78th minute when Pascale launched the ball down the field. Wilmington defenders attempted to pass the ball back to Kettington but Ssejjemba intercepted, touched around the Hammerheads netminder and buried the ball into the left hand corner of the open net.

Richmond narrowly missed two stoppage time chances to increase the lead when Burke played the ball forward to midfielder Matt Watson on the right side. As a Wilmington defender attempted to chest it down, Watson was able to get a piece of the ball and hammered it off the near post. Seconds later, midfielder Trey Alexander sent the ball to a streaking Burke on the left side, finding the keeper off his mark but his strike sailed just wide of the open target.

Kicking off the 94th consecutive year, the 2007 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup First Round is slated for Tuesday, June 12th with the Richmond Kickers hosting the Michigan Bucks of the Premier Development League at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium. Tickets are $10/adults, $5/youth and can be purchased in advance via RichmondKickers.com.
