July 14, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Thursday, July 14, 2005) - The Richmond Kickers will host the Charleston Battery this Sunday, July 17th at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium. The first 500 fans through the gate will receive a 2005 Richmond Kickers team poster.
The Kickers and the Battery meet Sunday for the third of four regular season match-ups this year, having exchanged wins home and home. Looking to avenge an earlier season loss to Charleston, the Kickers last faced the Battery on June 17th when they dropped a 2-1 decision on the road. Most recently, the Battery were defeated by the Rochester Raging Rhinos while the Kickers topped the Atlanta Silverbacks, both by a score line of 2-1 last Saturday.
"After a strong performance in Atlanta, we are full of confidence and ready as always for a fierce match-up with Charleston," comments Richmond Kickers Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw. "Points are vital at this stage of the season and we are well aware that Charleston needs the points to reignite their playoff chances while we need them to solidify our number one spot."
Players to Watch:
Kickers: Richmond forward Matthew Delicâte continues to lead the Kickers in scoring with eight goals and two assists, good for second in the league in points (18) and goals scored (8). A four-time USL First Division Team of the Week selection, Delicâte last tallied two goals over Charleston on May 30th. Meanwhile, forward Kevin Jeffrey's multiple goal game clinched the Kickers win over Atlanta last weekend while defender Matt Bobo's solid play preserved the 2-1 victory. Bobo garnered Team of the Week honors for his defensive efforts for the first time this season. Goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale is currently ranked in the top 10 of all USL goalkeeper categories including first in saves (67) and fifth in goals against (18) and shutouts (4).
Battery: Charleston co-leading scorers Lazo Alavanja and Greg Simmonds have recorded eight points each so far this season. Alavanja was responsible for the Battery's success over the Kickers on June 17th with a goal and an assist while Simmonds tallied the Battery's only goal in the 2-1 loss to Rochester last weekend. Forward Usiel Vasquez earned USL First Division Player of the Week honors on June 21st for consecutive game-winning goals over Richmond and Vancouver. Goalkeeper Chris Doyle is currently tied for seventh in the league with 20 goals against in 12 games played as well as eighth in saves (38) and tenth with a goals against average 1.666.
Doubleheader Scheduled For Sunday
The Richmond Kickers Future (PDL) will square off against the Raleigh CASL Elite as the first leg of a doubleheader scheduled for Sunday. Prior to the Kickers professional team, the Future and the Elite will kick off at 2:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium. The Future remain the only undefeated team in the PDL and most recently defeated the Bradenton Athletics 3-2 in overtime last weekend.
U.S. Open Cup Update
Lightning delays last night forced the Kickers and the Ocean City Barons of the Premier Development League to postpone their U.S. Open Cup Third Round match until next Tuesday, July 19th at 7:00 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium. With an MLS match-up at stake, the winner will advance to the Fourth Round of this year's Open Cup, hosting D.C. United of Major League Soccer on August 3rd.
