RICHMOND, VA - (Thursday, January 8, 2004) - The Richmond Kickers Professional team will open their 2004 A-League schedule against the defending A-League Champion Charleston Battery on Saturday, April 17th at 7:00pm.

The Kickers will join their competitors on the field in 28 games during the 2004 season. Of the 14 home games, 13 will be versus Eastern Conference rivals: Atlanta Silverbacks, Charleston Battery, Montreal Impact, Puerto Rico Islanders, Rochester Raging Rhinos, Syracuse Salty Dogs, Toronto Lynx and Virginia Beach Mariners. The lone game against a Western Conference foe will occur on Saturday, June 19th versus the Milwaukee Wave United. The Kickers will have home field advantage at the University of Richmond Stadium for the entire 2004 home schedule.

Twelve home games will kickoff at 7:00pm. Two exceptions are the Sunday, May 23rd match, versus the Atlanta Silverbacks at 6:00pm and the Friday, July 23rd match, versus the Rochester Raging Rhinos at 8:00pm. All but four home games will be played on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening. The Kickers will take the field two Wednesday and two Thursday evenings this season.

Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup

The Richmond Kickers' back-to-back regular season matches against the Virginia Beach Mariners on April 30th and May 1st will double as U.S. Open Cup qualifiers. The first encounter will be at home, with the Kickers traveling to Virginia Beach for the second match. The winner by aggregate goals will advance to the third round of the Open Cup. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in the United States. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the U.S., it is the domestic cup competition that gives any affiliated team in the U.S. a chance at winning the title of "United States Club Champions."

Playoff Structure

In 2004, a total of eight A-League teams will qualify for post-season play with the top four teams in each conference qualifying. All playoff rounds will be two-legged aggregate score series with the exception of the A-League Championship, which will be a single match pitting the two Conference Champions with the Host determined on a bid basis to be played on Saturday, September 18th.
