Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Friday, March 27, 2015) - The Richmond Kickers open the 2015 season on the road this Saturday, March 28 against the Wilmington Hammerheads at 7:00 p.m. The match will be broadcast live from Legion Stadium on YouTube.com. The Kickers return to City Stadium one week later to host Louisville City FC in the regular season home opener on Saturday, April 4 at 5:00 p.m. and tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.
Saturday's season opener marks the first of three meetings for the longtime rivals who will finish the series with matches in Richmond on April 10 and June 20. The two clubs last met on August 1, 2014 in Wilmington when the Kickers snapped a two-game stalemate with a 3-1 win, courtesy of goals by Matthew Delicâte and Samuel Asante.
Earlier that season, the Kickers and the Hammerheads battled to a pair of home and away draws. In June, the Kickers took an early lead on two first half Delicâte tallies before conceding two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation for a 2-2 tie. On the return trip later that month, Richmond rallied for a 1-1 draw after Tom Parratt's 60th minute goal was matched by Hugh Roberts to narrow the Kickers' all-time series record advantage to 12-6-8.
The Hammerheads concluded the 2014 season with a 9-8-11 record, good for sixth place in the USL standings with 38 points before dropping a 4-1 loss to the eventual USL Champions Sacramento Republic FC in the quarterfinal round of the USL Playoffs. Meanwhile, finishing third in the league with a 14-3-12 record, the Kickers carried home field advantage through the playoffs before being ousted by Harrisburg in the semifinal round.
The Kickers' return to Richmond on Saturday, April 4 officially kicks off the club's 23rd season at City Stadium. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. with live music from The Trillions, craft beer on tap, RVA food trucks and Woodfin replica jersey t-shirts for the first 500 fans.
