Richmond Kickers News Release

RICHMOND, VA - (Thursday, September 8, 2005) - The Richmond Kickers clinched a playoff position after a 1-1 tie with the Portland Timbers last weekend. Currently in fifth place in the USL First Division standings with 39 points, the Kickers will host either Seattle or Vancouver in the first leg of the First Round of post-season play on Friday, September 16th before traveling west to finish the series two days later.

This weekend marks the last week of regular season action and the outcome will determine the Kickers First Round opponent. A tight race for playoff positioning, the top six teams in the 12-team USL First Division standings will advance to post-season play.

Currently, Montreal and Rochester clinched the top two playoff spots (#1 and #2 respectively) and will receive Round One byes. Vancouver holds onto the third position while Seattle could finish fourth or fifth and Richmond could end up seeded fourth, fifth or sixth. Portland, Puerto Rico, Atlanta and Minnesota are battling for the remaining place. Portland sits in the driver's seat; if they win their remaining two games, they will automatically clinch the final spot. If Portland drops any points, Puerto Rico has the next best chance provided they win their remaining league games. Atlanta and Minnesota are long-shots but still have a chance if they win their games and the other teams lose.

All playoff rounds will be two-legged aggregate score series with the exception of the USL First Division Championship with the Host determined on a bid basis to be played on Saturday, October 1st.
