Minnesota Thunder News Release
ST. PAUL, Minn. (Thursday, September 8, 2005)--This Saturday, September 10, will mark the end of a 16-year era for the Minnesota Thunder. Head coach Buzz Lagos will coach the last regular season home game of his career against the Atlanta Silverbacks at 7:05 p.m. at James Griffin Stadium in St. Paul. Lagos has announced that he will be step down after the 2005 season.
In honor of the contributions Lagos has made to soccer in Minnesota, the Thunder will be distributing 2,000 Lagos autograph cards at the game courtesy of the Pioneer Press. Coach Lagos will also be recognized at halftime as several former Thunder players will be in attendance.
This night has also been labeled "Buzz Lagos Family & Friends Night." Lagos is inviting anybody he has come in contact with over the years to come out and support him in his last regular season game.
"It's going to be an emotional night, but I'm excited about the large turnout we are expecting," said Lagos. "There are many people that have been very supportive of me over the years and I hope to see them all on Saturday."
Saturday's match against Atlanta (9-14-3, 30 pts) could hold big playoff implications for the Thunder (7-10-10, 31 pts.) who currently sit in ninth place in the league. The Thunder still has a chance to make the playoffs depending on what happens in games throughout the league in the final weekend of play. Atlanta plays in Portland on Thursday and must either tie or win in order for the Thunder to stay alive. Puerto Rico is also in the race and cannot win either of their two home games this weekend for the Thunder to have a shot at the postseason. In all scenarios, the Thunder must win on Saturday.
The Minnesota Youth Soccer Association is a sponsor of Saturday night's game and will also hold a giveaway to the first fans in the gate. This is the last opportunity for MYSA members to use their complimentary Thunder ticket this season. The Thunder and MYSA are also organizing a donation station inside the stadium to support the relief efforts of hurricane Katrina. More information will be available Friday, September 9.
The Thunder will hold its annual jersey auction on Saturday. Fans will have an opportunity to bid on their favorite Thunder player's autographed jersey. The bidding will begin one hour prior to kick-off and will close at the end of halftime.
