RICHMOND, VA - (Tuesday, August 2, 2005) - The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce the recent signing of the 2004 Premier Development League (PDL) MVP, forward Ruben Mingo. Terms were agreed prior to the USL First Division roster freeze deadline of August 1st, although specific details of the contract were not disclosed.
A native of Irvine, California, Mingo joins the Kickers from the PDL Ocean City Barons where he led the team in scoring for two seasons (2004, 2005). He finished the 2004 campaign with 12 goals and five assists and was ranked 16th in the league in points (29) before earning PDL All-League Team and All-Eastern Conference Team honors. Most recently, he finished the 2005 PDL season with 11 goals and nine assists for 31 points, good for third in the league in assists and shots (54) and seventh in points (31). Mingo was named PDL Player of the Week for the week of May 17th for tallying four goals in the 6-2 win at Westchester and garnered PDL Team of the Week honors three weeks later for his goal and assist in the 2-1 win over Reading. In addition to an outstanding regular season record, Mingo contributed to the Barons U.S. Open Cup success this year, responsible for the game-winning goal during Ocean City's 4-0 upset over the Long Island Rough Riders of the USL Second Division on June 29th.
"We are excited to add a player of Ruben's caliber, passion, and intensity to our club," comments Richmond Kickers General Manager Paul Sterbenz. "He has certainly proven that he can score goals and create offense for two consecutive years at the PDL level and we believe he has the tools to duplicate that at the professional level."
Mingo briefly attended St. John's University before earning a scholarship to Mercer County Community College where he played for two seasons. He helped lead Mercer to the NJCAA National Championship finals both years; however, losing twice to Yavapai College (Arizona). As a sophomore, he was named to the 2002 NSCAA/adidas Men's Junior College Division I Scholar All-Region Second Team, leading the team to an 18-2 record.
