Minnesota Thunder News Release
ST. PAUL, Minn. (Tuesday, August 2, 2005)-Jeff Cunningham, the current leading goal scorer in Major League Soccer, will be testing his skills Wednesday night at Griffin Stadium in St. Paul against the Minnesota Thunder's back line. Cunningham and the Colorado Rapids (MLS) visit the Thunder Wednesday, August 3, in fourth round action of the U.S. Open Cup tournament. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
Tickets for this one of a kind event are still available by calling 651-917-TEAM or by ordering online at www.mnthunder.com.
Cunningham currently has 10 goals this season and on Saturday, scored two goals in the MLS All-Star game, helping his squad to a 4-1 victory over Fulham FC of the English Premier League.
The winner of Wednesday's game will play the winner of the Des Moines Menace (PDL) and the Kansas City Wizards (MLS). In the event the Thunder wins, it would travel to Kansas City or would host Des Moines.
"This game is sure to have an atmosphere much like last year's Open Cup match against the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS)," said head coach Buzz Lagos. "I still call that match the greatest game in Thunder history; perhaps this one will replace it."
There are only 16 teams left in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tourmanent. Dating back to 1914, the US Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual US Open Cup is a single-elimination tournament where the ultimate champion wins $100,000.
