
Keys Sweep Player of the Week Honors

Frederick, MD - The Carolina League has named Frederick Keys catcher Matt Wieters the Player of the Week, and right-hander Jake Arrieta the Pitcher of the Week for May 5th - 11th. Wieters, the #1 prospect in the Baltimore Orioles organization according to Baseball America, hit .421 over the past week, with three homeruns and four runs batted in. He now leads the Carolina League in homeruns (eight), and is second in batting average (.355).
Arrieta was equally as dazzling on the mound. The Texan went 1-0, in two starts this past week, with an earned run average of 1.50. Arrieta struck out 13 batters in just 12 innings of work. On the season, he's now 3-0 with a 2.01 ERA. He currently leads the league in K's with 53 in 44.2 innings of work. Opposing hitters are batting just .147 against him.
Both players were selected by the Orioles in the 2007 draft. Wieters was the fifth overall pick by the O's, and received a record-$6 million signing bonus. Arrieta, a former TCU Horned Frog, was Baltimore's fifth round draft pick.
Wieters, Arrieta, and the rest of the Keys are currently on the road. They'll play the opener of a four-game series tonight, against the Salem Avalanche. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM. The Keys will return to Frederick on Friday for a ten-game home stand. They'll open it up with a four-game set against the Lynchburg Hillcats.
