Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - For the second time in less than a week, Aaron Poreda breezed thru the Lynchburg lineup in guiding Winston-Salem to a 4-2 win over the Hillcats on Monday night at Ernie Shore Field. A week after holding Lynchburg to one hit in seven innings, Poreda (3-2) scattered three hits in six shutout innings with five strikeouts to earn his third consecutive win.
In his last two starts against Lynchburg, the 2007 first round pick of the Chicago White Sox has worked 13 innings while holding the Hillcats to one run on four hits with 12 strikeouts.
Winston-Salem manufactured a run in the first inning to take an early lead. With the bases empty and two outs, Javier Colina walked and stole second base. Brandon Allen followed with an RBI single to give the Warthogs a 1-0 lead. Allen, who finished 2-for-3, extended his hitting streak to 12 games, which is a season-high for the Warthogs first baseman.
Winston cracked the game open with three more runs in the third inning off Lynchburg starting pitcher Jared Hughes. Sergio Miranda walked and scored on an RBI single by John Shelby III. Later in the inning, Brandon Allen singled to move Shelby III to third with two outs. Hughes hit Sergio Sanchez in the helmet with a pitch to load the bases. Next, Lee Cruz floated a two-run single into short center field to extend the Warthogs lead to 4-0.
The Hillcats wasted little time in taking advantage of Poreda's departure as Alex Presley lifted a two-run home run off Warthogs reliever Ricky Brooks in the seventh inning to cut Lynchburg's deficit in half at 4-2. That was a close as they would get as Ryan Rote worked a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to garner his third save in as many opportunities.
Hughes (1-5) was lifted from the game after recording the first out in the fifth inning. He surrendered four runs on four hits with two walks to take his second consecutive loss against Winston-Salem.
Game two of this three-game set will take place on Tuesday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs will hand the ball to RHP Matt Zaleski (0-1, 5.28) and the Hillcats will send RHP Michael Crotta (3-2, 3.25) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
