Frederick Keys News Release

Frederick, MD - The Frederick Keys defeated the Trenton Thunder for the first time in 2021 by a final score of 4-2. JP Fullerton launched his first home run of the season, and Mason Auer closed the door in the 9th for his first save of the Keys season.

Ronan Kopp and Dylan Heid started the game for the Keys and Thunder respectively, each not allowing a run. The Trenton Thunder opened the scoring in the 5th as Carson Matthews launched a solo home run on the second pitch he saw from Dylan Tebrake.

In the bottom of the 5th, JP Fullerton took matters into his own hands launching a solo shot of his own. The homer, which was launched to the deepest part of Nymeo Field, left the bat at 101 MPH and tied the game at 1-1.

Frederick reliever Adam McKillican gave up a home run to Matthews in the 7th inning, his second of the game. At the time it gave Trenton a 2-1 lead.

The Keys worked back from the deficit in the bottom of the 7th as Tremaine Spears led the frame off with a walk. Anthony Herron Jr. singled him to second base. Eddie McCabe then rolled a ground ball to third base and in trying to turn a double play, the ball was thrown away allowing Herron Jr. to score from second. McCabe was able to swipe second as Tyler Doanes was at the plate. The throw down to second was wild and allowed Spears to score easily from third. Yareb Martinez singled home McCabe to make it a 4-2 ballgame. The Keys are now 3-1-1 when leading after the 7th and 8th innings.

In the 9th, Mason Auer was called upon to make his first relief appearance for the Keys. Auer, a two way player, moved from right field to the mound to pick up his first save of the season. After two quick outs, Jonny Weaver singled and moved up to third on a pair of wild pitches. In an epic at-bat, Matthews drew a walk to put the tying run on base. Daniel Harris flew out to right field to end the game.
