Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
PEORIA, ILL. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels claimed a 1-0 five-inning victory Sunday against the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park in a game that was completed early due to rain. Cedar Rapids' win came in the opener of what was scheduled to be a doubleheader, but game two of the twin bill was postponed.
A makeup date has not been officially announced yet. Since the only first-half series remaining between the Kernels and the Chiefs will be played in Cedar Rapids, it is expected that the game will be made up at some point within a three-day series from Monday, May 15 through Wednesday, May 17 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Caleb Hamilton drove in the only run for Cedar Rapids (13-10) in its rain-shortened triumph. Lewin Diaz was hit by a pitch from John Kilichowski to lead off the fourth inning, and Jaylin Davis followed with a single. After a strikeout from Travis Blankenhorn, Hamilton doubled to left field and drove in Diaz to lift the Kernels to a 1-0 lead.
Right-hander Clark Beeker kept the Chiefs (9-13) quiet in a nearly-perfect start. He only allowed a two-out single to Stefan Trosclair in the first inning and quickly induced an inning-ending force out against Andrew Young to close the frame. That started a streak of 13 straight outs from Beeker, who retired the side in order during the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings to cap a shutout appearance.
Sunday's game, which was preceded by a rain delay, was halted just before the start of the sixth inning. Following a 42-minute delay, the contest was called, and game two of the scheduled twin bill was postponed. Beeker (3-1) earned his career-best third consecutive victory while Kilichowski (0-3) took a tough loss. Both pitchers recorded complete games within the rain-shortened tilt.
The Kernels continue their 2017 season with a six-game homestand that starts Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. with the opener of a three-game series against the Lake County Captains. Probable pitchers are Kernels right-hander Eduardo Del Rosario (2-1, 2.75) and Captains southpaw Juan Hillman (1-3, 10.59).
