SALT LAKE CITY-RHP Kelvim Escobar will make a Major League rehab start for the Stingers tonight against Sacramento at Franklin Covey Field. Escobar made one rehab start for Salt Lake at Las Vegas back on April 19. He is scheduled to make three rehabilitation starts with the Stingers. The Stingers lead the season series over Sacramento 8-7 and are looking for their first season series victory over the River Cats since 2002. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Radio AM 1230 at 7:00 pm and online at www.stingersbaseball.com.

Escobar, 29, opened the 2005 season on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain. He made one rehab start for single-A Rancho Cucamonga on April 14 at Modesto, throwing 58 pitches. Escobar gave up only one hit and two walks with seven strikeouts in that start for the Quakes. He made a rehab start for Salt Lake at Las Vegas on April 19 and gave up two earned runs on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts over four innings. Escobar has posted a 2-2 record and 3.54 ERA (40.2 IP - 16 ER) with 17 walks and 46 strikeouts in seven starts for the Angels this season.

Escobar's 2005 campaign has been riddled with injuries. He began the season on the disabled list with a right elbow strain and was not activated until April 23. Escobar was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 12 with a bone spur in his right elbow. He was activated on May 27 before being placed on the disabled list again on June 10 (retroactive to June 9) with a bone spur in his right elbow. Escobar had surgery at the end of June to shave down the bone spur that was causing discomfort in his pitching elbow.

Escobar completed his first season with the Angels with an 11-12 record and 3.93 ERA (208.1 IP - 91 ER) in 33 starts in 2004. He led the Halos in innings pitched (tied with RHP Bartolo Colon), walks (76) and strikeouts (191). He ranked 10th in the American Leauge in ERA, fourth in strikeouts, eighth in average against (.244) and third in strikeouts per nine innings (8.3). Escobar is just one of only four active pitchers in Major League Baseball to have made at least 100 starts and record at least 50 saves joining John Smoltz, Tom Gordon and Derek Lowe. Escobar owns a career 71-69 record and 4.42 ERA (1098 IP - 539 ER) with 58 saves, 487 walks and 981 strikeouts in 341 Major League games.

Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by Toronto on July 3, 1992, Escobar owns a career 69-67 record and 4.45 ERA with 58 saves. The La Guaira, Venezuela native was signed by the Angels as a free agent prior to the 2004 season and currently resides in Barquisimeto, Venezuela.
