Kelusky Returns to Form but Wings Fly Past Roughnecks
March 22, 2003 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Calgary Roughnecks News Release
Roughnecks captain Tracy Kelusky returned to his wizard-ways scoring five goals and adding three assists, but it wasn't enough as a rusty Roughnecks squad dropped a 19-13 decision to the Philadelphia Wings on the first game of the club's two-game eastern road trip.
The game marked the first in almost three-weeks for the Roughnecks following the clubs 12-8 win over the New York Saints on March 2 at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
Philadelphia took advantage of the Roughnecks off-time in the first quarter, scoring seven goals on their first 10 shots. Curtis Palidwor was pulled after the fifth goal and replaced by Matt King.
The Roughnecks came out firing at the start of the second half and pulled within two with goals from Kaleb Toth and Kyle Goundrey. Philadelphia then scored before Kelusky answered with his fifth goal of the game on the power play. Philadelphia goals by Cromwell and Spano chased goalie Matt King from the net bringing Palidwor's return.
The teams traded goals from the Roughnecks Shawn Cable and Philadelphia's Cromwell to end the quarter. The Wings led, 14-11, with one quarter remaining.
The Wings dominated in the final quarter, leaving no room for a Roughnecks comeback.. Philadelphia started the quarter with goals by Mark Frye, Henderson and Spano. Jason Wulder, playing in his 100th career game, tallied for the âRiggers, but the Wings bounced right back with goals by Ratcliffe and Henderson. A late goal by Roughnecks rookie of the year candidate Lewis Ratcliff was not enough to help the Roughnecks.
Five other players scored for the Roughnecks besides Kelusky including Kaleb Toth (3G,1A), Shawn Cable (1G,2A), Lewis Ratcliff (2G,3A), Kyle Goundrey (1G,5A), and Jason Wulder (1G).
The Roughnecks now head to New York for a rematch with the Saints Sunday afternoon.
