Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, FL - Cody Keefer's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning helped the Hammerheads earn a split of Tuesday's doubleheader with Palm Beach. The right fielder's go-ahead base knock boosted Jupiter to a 3-2 victory in game two after falling 2-1 in heartbreaking fashion in game one.
With the game tied at two with one out in the bottom of the sixth, Blake Barber reached on an infield single up the middle. Barber would then steal second, his eighth swipe of the season, to put the go-ahead run in scoring position.
Keefer would then fight off a pitch from southpaw Iden Nazario into left as Barber motored around to score what ended up being the winning run.
Casey McCarthy would work around a leadoff walk to earn his second save of the season for the Sharks.
In game two the Birds would take an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first in when Bruce Caldwell drove home a run on a fielder's choice and Luke Voit hit a triple into the corner in right to drive home Caldwell.
Jupiter would rally to tie the game in the third inning when Luis Sanz and Ryan Goetz started the frame with back-to-back singles. Yosmany Guerra would then single in to left-center as Sanz scored.
Matt Juengel would follow with a single of his own to plate Goetz and tie the game at two. The score would remain the same until Keefer's single in the sixth.
In game one Jupiter pitching dominated for the majority of the game.
Dan Jennings made the start in his second rehab game with Jupiter and he tossed two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Raudel Lazo would follow him out of the pen and he tossed a 1-2-3 inning.
Alan Scott was next to get in on the action. He did allow the first base runner of the game with a walk in the fourth. In the fifth Palm Beach picked up its first hit when Jimmy Bosco reached on an infield single to first on a bang-bang play.
Colby Suggs would preserve the one-hitter with a clean top of the sixth inning.
Jupiter scored its lone run in the third when Anthony Gomez and Goetz reached on two-out singles. Guerra would then hit a grounder to first in which David Washington bobbled and then threw wildly to the pitcher who was covering the bag. Gomez would score as two errors were charged to Washington.
The score would remain 1-0 until Washington got a chance to make up for his error in the bottom of the seventh. With the Birds trailing by a run, Washington hit an 0-2 pitch from Sean Donatello over the fence in right field for a game-tying homer.
It was Washington's 15th long ball of the year and his fourth against the Hammerheads this season.
Anthony Garcia would then reach on a single before a perfect hit-and-run single by Bosco through the right side put runners on the corners.
Palm Beach would then put on another play as Gerwuins Velazco laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line to complete a beautiful squeeze play as Garcia scored the go-ahead run.
Logan Billbrough would pitch a perfect ninth inning to save the game for Palm Beach.
The Hammerheads and Cardinals will play the final Fins vs. Feathers game of the 2014 season on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
