Clearwater Threshers News Release

TAMPA- The Clearwater Threshers were unsuccessful in the spoiler role Tuesday night as they fell 4-1 to the Tampa Yankees in game one of a three game series.

Mark Leiter, Jr. got the start for the Threshers (28-37) and gave Clearwater 6.1 solid innings. Leiter (3-5) surrendered three runs, two earned, on 10 hits while striking out two and walking one. He was charged with the loss.

The Yankees (36-28) got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning off of the Threshers right-hander. Mike Ford led off the frame with a double and later scored on an RBI single by Trent Garrison.

Tampa added one more after an error extended the inning. Mark Payton came up and knocked in Garrison with an RBI base hit of his own.

Ford finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and Payton contributed with a 3-for-4 night and an RBI.

Yankees' starter Caleb Smith held the Threshers in check in his six innings of work. Smith (5-1) did not allow a run while striking out five and walking one. The lefty only gave up two hits.

The Threshers' lone run came in the seventh inning. Brian Pointer led off with a double, was moved up to third by a Harold Martinez grounder and driven in on a sacrifice fly to center by Brandon Short.

That was the closest Clearwater would get, as the Yankees tacked on a run each in the seventh and eighth innings.

Game two of the series is Wednesday at George M. Steinbrenner Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Jordan Guth gets the call for Clearwater while Brett Gerritse takes the mound for Tampa. Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on threshersbaseball.com.
