Elmira Pioneers News Release
Le Stade Municipal - quebec City, Quebec - Monday, august 19, 2002 -
RH Greg Keagle (8-9) fired his 2nd consecutive one-hitter as the Pioneers ended their 4-game losing slide with a 5-2 victory at the Quebe Capitales Monday night in front of 3,548 fans in Quebec City
Earlier in the day Keagle was honored as the Northern League East pitcher of the week for his 5-hit shutout performance of Quebec last Wednesay at Dunn Field which also was Elmira's most recent win.
This time around, the Horseheads native scattered 8 hits and only allowed a 2-run HR in the 8th to rookie outfielder Jean-Sebastian Langlois as Quebec was able to avoid being shutout at home for the first time this season. He walked none and 4 strikeouts while also hitting a batter to shut-down the league's 2nd highest scoring team (trailing New Jersey).
Keagle has won 3 straight including his back-to-back wins against Quebec. He is 4-1 in his last 5 starts following a dismal 1-8 stretch through June and July.
Quebec has been shutout twice this seson, both at Elmira, and had not been shutout at home in 2002.
Brandon Pernell singled in the 5th inning to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, the 4th longest in the league this year. Pernell also had a pair of stolen bases and a run scored. Pedro Quero was 2-for-4 including his team leading 49th RBI of the season.
Elmira jumped on Quebec starter Tim Stanton (9-5) early with 3 runs in the top of the 2nd as 4 consecutive Pioneers reached safely. Pedro Quero started the rally with a single to RF. Brian Jnoes walked on 4 pitches. Newcomer Mike Terhune collected his first Northern League RBI with a single to right-center scoring Quero. Cesar King increased the lead to 2-0 as his single to RF drove hme Jones. Rolando Belo beat out a double-play ball for an RBI fielder's choice scoring Terhune from 3rd base extending the lead to 3-0.
The Pioneers struck again in the 5th inning with back to back singles by Pernell and Ron Bush with 1 out. Pernell stole 3rd and scored on a poor throw to 3rd by catcher Lee Bagley to make it 4-0.
Rafael Alvarez led of the 8th inning with a double to deep LF. He tagged up on Michael Coleman';s fly-out to shallow CF and scored from 3rd on Pedro Qeuro's single to LF to complete the Pioneer scoring.
Keagle had his bid for his 2nd consecutive shutout broken-up in the 8th inning when Lee Bagley led off with an infield single off the glove of 3B Mike Terhune. #9 hitter Jean-Sebastin Langlois jumped on Keaghle's 1-1 offering for a 2-run HR. For Langlois it was only his 2nd career professional base-hit.
Solid defense helped Keagle's confiedence early. In the 1st inning, Patrick Scalabrini reached on a booted goundr at 2nd by Rolando Bello. Eric Kofler hit a deep drive off the wall in RF but was faked out by Michael ?Coleman who played it casually off the wall and fired it to 2nd in plenty of time to throw out Kofler who was jogging in seeminly unaware that a throw was coming. John Coton shot pone back up the middle but Keagle got a glove on it and the ball deflected to Ron Bush at short who was able to throw ou the batter as Quebec left a runner stranded at 3rd base.
The Pioneers played without Osani Garcia and Kenji Iwahara who stayed behind for this trip.
Sean Brummett (7-4) goes up against Danny Prata (9-3) Tuesday evening at 7:05 in the middle game of the 3-game series. The Pioneers next home-game is Thursday night vs. New Jersey on Star-Gazette Famiy Night. The homestand will also be highlighted by great proptions on Friday (The Valley Community night with NewsChannell 36), Saturday (Holdiay Inn Hat Night with WETM-TV) and Sunday (Shreibman's Jeweler's Diamond Dig with Dig Safely NY).
