Kannapolis Surrenders More Late Inning Runs to Charleston, Falls 2-1

April 13, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

Kannapolis, NC - The I's jumped out to another early lead in the first inning as Luis Gonzalez led off with a walk after a 7-pitch at-bat. After a single to left field off the bat of Justin Yurchak, Craig Dedelow doubled on a line drive to center to score Gonzalez, giving Kannapolis a 1-0 lead.

Starter John Parke got off to a shaky start in the first inning, plunking two batters with two outs, but settled in after getting his third fly ball out of the inning to end the first. In the second, Parke struck out three of the four batters he faced, three of his six strikeouts on the day. Throughout five innings on the mound, RiverDogs pitcher Nick Nelson went toe-to-toe with Parke, as Nelson struck out a season-high 12 Kannapolis batters.

After five complete innings, both starts got relieved of their duties by their managers, with the I's leading 1-0, as Justin Jirschele went to Zach Lewis out of the bullpen to help preserve Parke's solid start. Threatening in the top of the sixth, Dedelow tripled on a line drive to right field for Kannapolis, but Tate Blackman and Evan Skoug both went down on strikes to leave the second run 90 feet away.

In the bottom of the sixth, Lewis (BS, 1) surrendered a leadoff infield-single to Steven Sensley, followed by a wild pitch that allowed the runner to get into scoring position. After a groundout that allowed Sensley to scurry to third, Chris Hess singled off Lewis to bring in Sensley to tie the game, 1-1.

Two innings later in the eighth, Sensley smacked the first pitch that he saw from Kevin Escorcia (L, 0-2) over the left field wall, giving Charleston (5-4) the 2-1 lead. Down by one in the ninth, Skoug reached second base on an error by the RiverDogs left fielder, Frederick Cuevas, getting pushed over to third after a sacrifice bunt from Blackman. After a Michael Hickman strikeout, Laz Rivera grounded to short to end the ball game, giving the RiverDogs their second straight comeback win against the Intimidators.

Kannapolis (5-4) will look to take their first game of the four-game series Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. at Joe Riley Park.
