Lake County Captains News Release

(Eastlake, OH)--Kannapolis outfielder Aaron Cunningham had two hits, including a first-inning home run, and the Intimidators turned a triple-play Saturday night, as they claimed an 8-2 win over the Lake County Captains at Classic Park.

Cunningham's two-run homer off Jim Deters was his ninth of the season, and came after Paulo Orlando's fly ball dropped in between Jaun Valdes and Mike Conroy for a double.

The Intimidators (12-22) extended the lead to 4-0 with unearned runs off Deters in the second and fifth innings. Both runs scored on Captains errors.

The Captains (19-15) scored twice in the fifth against Derek Rodriguez (5-10) on a bases-loaded walk to Max Ramirez and an RBI groundout by Mike Conroy. Mike Butia was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning while trying to score on a wild pitch.

The Intimidators blew the game open with four runs in the eighth off Captains reliever Doodle Hicks to take an 8-2 lead. Cunningham had a single and a stolen base in the inning.

Kannapolis sent the crowd home in disbelief in the ninth. The Captains loaded the bases with three straight singles off reliever Matt Long. Chris Gimenez then hit a sharp grounder to third baseman Juan Camacho, who then started an around-the-horn triple play to end the game.

The triple-play was the first ever turned against the Captains, and the second triple-play in the history of Classic Park. The Captains turned a triple-Play in 2004.

Gimenez saw his 14-game hitting streak snapped on the play.

Deters (8-8) scattered seven hits over five innings and allowed four runs, two earned. He did not walk a batter and struck out five, giving him a team-high 80 strikeouts on the season.

The Captains and Intimidators will play game three of the series Sunday afternoon. The first 2,000 kids age 12 and under will receive a Captains Sports Sack, courtesy of Lake Hospital system. For tickets, call 440-954-WINS.
