IHL 2 Kalamazoo Wings

Kalamazoo Wings Week in Review

May 15, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

The Kalamazoo Wings continued "Destination: Colonial Cup" with Game Four of their Semi-Final Series against the Rockford IceHogs. For the first time in the series, Rockford struck first with a shorthanded goal from Jason Notermann (2) at the 5:18 into the second period. Less than two minutes later, Tyler Willis (1) deflected a cross rink pass by Tyler Rennette past Ronnie Vogel to put the K-Wings even at 1-1. In the waning moments of the second period, the same combination hooked up; however, this time it was Willis finding Rennette (2) with just 1.8 seconds to play in the period to give the K-Wings a 2-1 lead. Midway in the third period, the K-Wings put the game out of reach with a power-play goal from Dustin Virag (2) to give Kalamazoo a two-goal cushion. Goaltender Joel Martin shut the door on the IceHogs stopping 26 of the 27 shots he faced including all seven he faced in the final period to give the K-Wings a 3-1 victory over Rockford and a four games to none series victory over the IceHogs. The victory puts the K-Wings into their first Colonial Cup Finals. In fact, the K-Wings will be making their first Finals appearance of any kind since the 1980-81 season, when they were in the International Hockey League. Kalamazoo will be searching for their first Championship since the 1979-80 season, when they captured their second straight Turner Cup (IHL).

Fast Forward

The K-Wings will continue "Destination: Colonial Cup" this weekend with Game's One and Two of the Colonial Cup Finals against either the Danbury Trashers or the Muskegon Fury. Danbury leads the Best of Seven Semi-Final Series three games to two, with Game Six of the Series to be played tonight. A Muskegon victory, would force a deceive Game Seven tomorrow in Muskegon.

During the regular season, the K-Wings were 4-1-0 against Danbury. The two teams have never met in the playoffs.

The K-Wings were 6-4-1 against the Muskegon Fury in the regular season. Kalamazoo is 0-1 lifetime in the playoffs against Muskegon. The Fury defeated the K-Wings in the UHL Wildcard Game during the 2001 Colonial Cup Playoffs.

Everyone Has a Part

Just like in the regular season, every K-Wing player that has played a game on their active roster has recorded a point in the 2006 UHL Colonial Cup Playoffs. The K-Wings are the only team in the UHL playoffs that have received point production from every player that has dressed.

Get the Point

Forward Tyler Rennette, who missed 34 straight games to end the regular season, hasn't missed a beat since returning to the K-Wings lineup. Dating back to the injury, Rennette is on a six-game point streak, which includes a two-game postseason scoring streak, that includes two goals and two assists.

Eight Isn't Enough

During the regular season the K-Wings longest winning streak was eight games. The K-Wings start the week, on an eight-game postseason winning streak.

Four Straight Games

Forward Damian Surma enters week on a four-game point streak. The four-game streak is the longest postseason point streak by any player on the K-Wings roster.

The Obscure Stat of the Week

The K-Wings, who will appear in their first Colonial Cup Finals in their franchises history, will also be searching for their first championship since 1980 (Turner Cup). The last time the K-Wings appeared in their league's Finals was back in the 1980-81 season, when they lost in the International Hockey League Finals to Saginaw.
