Kalamazoo Wings News Release
The Kalamazoo Wings continued "Destination: Colonial Cup" with Game One of the Colonial Cup Finals Friday (5/19) night at Wings Stadium against the Danbury Trashers. With nine days between playoff series, the well-rested K-Wings answered the bell by scoring two-goals in the opening six-minutes of the first period en route to their 6-1 victory over Danbury. Kalamazoo put the game out of reach in the second period with goals from Nick Bootland (9) and Jason Deitsch (4). Danbury recorded their lone-goal of the contest late in the second period with a goal from Drew Omicioli (10). The K-Wings continued the offensive onslaught in the third period with goals from Tyler Rennette (4) and Lucas Drake (9). Goaltender Joel Martin knocked aside 19 shots to earn his ninth victory of the postseason. The victory gave the K-Wings a one game to none lead in the Best of Seven Series.
On Saturday (5/21), in front of the largest home crowd (4,686) to ever watch a K-Wings UHL playoff game, Kalamazoo continued the Colonial Cup Finals with Game Two against the Trashers. Kalamazoo didn't waste any time getting the crowd into the game, as Damian Surma (3) tipped in his own rebound 51 seconds into the game. The K-Wings retained their 1-0 lead into the beginning of the second period. Danbury's Danny Stewart (4) brought the Trashers back into the game with unassisted goal 24 seconds into the period. Just 2:31 later, Danbury took their first lead of the series with blue-line blast from Sergei Durdin (1). The Trashers received the eventual game-winning goal in the early stages in the third period. Danbury, who entered Saturday night with a league best six shorthanded goals, added another one to their tally, this time from Alex Goupil (1) to give them a 3-1 lead. The K-Wings cut the lead to a single goal midway in the period with Nick Bootland's team best 10th of the playoffs, but it wouldn't be enough, as Danbury's David Beaurgard (12) added an empty-netter less than a minute remaining in the game to give the Trashers a 4-2 victory, which tied the series at one game apiece.
