K-Mets Use Five-Run Seventh to Pull Away from Cards
June 28, 2018 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Kingsport Axmen News Release
The Kingsport Mets used a five-run seventh inning on Thursday night to stay unbeaten at home with a 7-3 victory against Johnson City.
The K-Mets (7-1) offense got things started right away with a first inning home run by Shervyen Newton to dead center. Newton finished 1-2 with two reaches and two RBIs. The 19-year old ups his season average to .417, with an impressive .694 slugging percentage.
Jose Butto got the start and pitched well, allowing just one single and three walks, while striking out seven. Unfortunately for Butto, the high strike out numbers added to his pitch count, keeping him from completing the five innings needed to qualify for the win.
Picking up the win, was reliever Ivan Jean, who improves to 2-0 on the season. Jean retired all four men he faced, including getting out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth.
Kingsport grabbed an insurance run in the sixth, when Luis Santana's hot smash went under the glove of Johnson City's third baseman, allowing another run to score.
The Cardinals got that run back in the top of the seventh, but Kingsport responded off of the Johnson City bullpen to the tune of four hits and five runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. The big blow in the inning was Hayden Senger's three-run double to the left-center wall.
Johnson City plated two more in the ninth, but could get no closer, as the Mets improved to 4-0 at Hunter Wright Stadium.
Game two of the series is tomorrow night at 6:30, and right-hander Nate Peden will look to keep the Mets unbeaten at home. Tomorrow is Eastman Appreciation Night, as the Mets are welcoming Eastman employees and their families to the ballpark.
