K-Mets Take Series Finale from Jays

The Kingsport Mets earned a big win and a series victory as they defeated the Bluefield Blue Jays 10-4 on Tuesday evening.

Early on it appeared as though the Blue Jays (31-22), owner of the second best record in the Appalachian League, would run away with the rubber match.

Bluefield scored a pair in the first and second innings and pounded out six hits in the opening two frames, taking a 4-0 advantage into the third.

However, the third inning would be the turning point.

Kingsport starter Willy Taveras retired the Jays in order in the top of the third, en route to four more scoreless frames that the hurler would post on the evening.

When Taveras got rolling on the mound, the Kingsport bats got hot at the dish.

The K-Mets (28-25) exploded for seven runs in the third to turn the game on its end.

The inning got started as many do, with a leadoff walk. Following the walk, Robby Kidwell smoked his first professional home run to cut the deficit to two.

Four batters later with the bases loaded, Mark Vientos hit into what appeared to be an inning-ending double play. However, a bad throw by the Blue Jay shortstop allowed Vientos to be safe and the tying runs to score.

Following a Kenny Hernandez double, Raul Beracierta tripled in Vientos and Hernandez, and later scored on a wild pitch to cap the crazy third inning.

The lead would be plenty enough as Taveras (4-0), who did not allow another hit in his seven innings of work. Mitch Hickey and Brian Metoyer finished the game out without drama, as they faced the minimum over their one inning apiece.

The Mets will observe the league-wide off day tomorrow before they hit the road for a six-game, five-day road trip. The Mets will play three games in Pulaski Thursday-Saturday, before finishing the trip off in Greeneville with a doubleheader Sunday and a single game Monday.

Then the Mets will finish up their 2018 home campaign with a six-game home stand starting next Tuesday.
