K-Mets Lose to Astros 12-6 in Extras

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (July 3, 2014 - A massive crowd of 1,576 got quite the deal at Hunter Wright Stadium on Thursday night, seeing free baseball and a postgame fireworks display. Unfortunately the outcome went against the Kingsport Mets, who lost 12-6 to the Greeneville Astros in 10 innings.
Kingsport held the Astros to four hits through regulation, but Greeneville erupted for six hits in the 10th inning. The Astros plated six runs in the process, more than enough to hold off the K-Mets in the bottom half of the inning and record their second straight win. The Astros (6-8) drew even with Kingsport (6-8) for third place in the Appalachian League's West Division.
Greeneville actually had a 6-3 lead through seven innings, but Kingsport rallied to force free baseball. The K-Mets got two runs in the eighth after three consecutive base hits and a sacrifice fly. Then, Kingsport tied the game in the ninth inning on Ivan Wilson's one-out home run.
Wilson, who had tallied four strikeouts previously in the game and actually struck out in nine consecutive plate appearances, lined the 0-2 pitch from Aaron Greenwood into the left-field corner, sparking a huge reaction from the fans in attendance.
Kingsport shortstop Luis Guillorme had the best offensive line of the night, going four-for-5 with two runs scored and reaching base in all six of his plate appearances. Jean Rodriguez did well out of the No. 2 spot, going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and also drawing a walk. Eudor Garcia, Pedro Perez and Vicente Lupo each contributed a pair of hits for the K-Mets, who outhit Greeneville 14-10 despite the Astros' 10th-inning explosion.
Juan Santana, the Astros' No. 2 hitter, also had a big night. His towering solo home run to left field in the seventh inning highlighted a 4-for-6 performance that saw him score five runs and steal a base. Leadoff hitter Jason Martin had the only other multi-hit game for Greeneville.
The K-Mets return home Sunday to open a three-game series against the Pulaski Mariners. Kingsport native Daniel Kilgore, an offensive lineman for the San Francisco 49ers, will be in attendance and throw out the first pitch.
K-METRICS: Kingsport had an abundance of base runners on Thursday night. The K-Mets went 4-for-20 with runners in scoring position, and tallied a whopping 17 at-bats with men at second and/or third base through the first six innings of the game.
NOTES: This was the first extra-inning home game of the season for Kingsport, which is now 1-1 in extras overall in 2014. The K-Mets won a 17-inning marathon over the Princeton Rays last week. ... Wilson posted his third home run of the season. ... Ramon Estevez (0-1) took the loss for Kingsport and was on the hook for five of the six runs in the 10th inning. ... K-Mets starter Gaby Almonte went five innings in a no-decision. ... Greenwood blew the save after giving up the home run to Wilson but worked the 10th to improve his record to 2-0.
