Greeneville Astros News Release

Greeneville, TN - In front of the fifth largest crowd in Pioneer Park history on Friday night, the Greeneville Astros (7-8) scored early and often on their way to a 14-1 blowout win over the Kingsport Mets (6-9). The 3,458 fans in attendance expected to see the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration presented by Landair and Marsh Propane that followed the game, but the offensive fireworks by the Astros during the game were an added bonus.

After scoring 12 runs on Thursday night in Kingsport, Friday's game marked the second consecutive night in which the Astros have recorded a new season-high for runs. In total, they have now scored 26 runs over their last two games with a lot of different players involved in the action on Friday.

Seven different Astros' batters had a hit while four had a multi-hit game and three had multiple RBI. The Astros also got on base with a lot of walks, tying the all-time club record of 13, led by Jason Martin with three.

After finishing Thursday's game with a six-run 10th inning, the Astros immediately opened Friday's game with a six runs in the first. The tone was set early with a leadoff triple by Jason Martin, who scored the game's first run on a Juan Santana RBI single. A Jacob Nottingham two-run double and a Luis Reynoso RBI single accounted for the next three scores before the Mets gave up two more on a wild pitch and a passed ball.

The Astros went on to add three more runs over the next five innings. A Jason Martin RBI single in the third was sandwiched in-between Sean McMullen scoring on a ground out in the second and hitting a sacrifice fly for a score in the fifth.

Up 9-0, the Astros were not done as they exploded in the seventh inning with five more runs. This time, the damage was done on a Juan Santana sacrifice fly, Trent Woodward and Luis Reynoso RBI singles, a score on a ground out, and another score on a Mets' wild pitch.

Leading 14-0, the Astros finally gave up a run in the ninth inning when the Mets' Zach Mathieu scored on a fielding error. However, the Astros pitching staff had a strong night overall.

Starting pitcher Jose Montero picked up the win after he gave up just two hits over his five innings of work to go along with three walks and four strikeouts. Joshua James followed with seven strikeouts over the next three innings while allowing just one hit and one walk. Finally, Jorge Perez finished the game by pitching the final inning while giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

In the end, the Mets finished with one run on five hits while the Astros totaled their 14 runs on eleven hits. Seven wild pitches and two passed balls by the Mets also aided the Astros' cause.

The Astros have now defeated the Mets three consecutive games, with the first two in Kingsport, and will be looking to close the series with one more win on Saturday night at home. Game time is scheduled for 6:00pm. An Astros jersey rally towel will be the giveaway once the gates open at 5:00pm.
