TONIGHT: The Mudcats continue a six game home stand tonight with the game three of a three game series versus the Down East Wood Ducks at Five County Stadium in Zebulon.
ICYMI: Cooper Hummel and Dallas Carroll combined to drive in two, two-out runs in the eighth to tie it at 2-2 and Max McDowell forced in Ryan Aguilar from second in the tenth as the Mudcats rallied back late to defeat the Wood Ducks 3-2 in ten innings on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium.
ABOUT THE LAST ONE: Last night's victory was Carolina's fourth in extra innings this season; it was also their third extra innings, walkoff victory versus the Wood Ducks this season. The win also snapped Carolina's losing streak at four straight games.
VS. DEWD: Tonight's game is the third and final game of a three game series between the Mudcats and Wood Ducks. It is also the 16th of 23 total games between the two teams this season. The Wood Ducks lead the overall season series 9-6; with six of those victories coming at Grainger Stadium where the Wood Ducks are 6-0 against Carolina. The current series is tied at 1-1.
STARTING OFF: RHP Devin Williams will make his Carolina League debut tonight as he gets the start for the Mudcats against the visiting Wood Ducks. Williams underwent "Tommy John" surgery in March of last year and would end up missing all of the 2017 season due to injury. He last pitched in the Brewers organization during the 2016 campaign where he combined to pitch to a 3.79 ERA between Low-A Wisconsin and High-A Brevard County. He also combined to total 94 strikeouts, 46 walks and a 1.41 WHIP over 97.1 innings between both levels during the 2016 season. Williams was selected by the Brewers in the 2nd round of the 2013 MLB draft out of Hazelwood West High School in Missouri.
WHERE THEY RANK: LHP Cam Roegner is currently 2nd in the Carolina League in earned run average (1.85). Roegner is also tied for 2nd in wins (6) and 3rd innings pitched (63.1)... SS Luis Aviles Jr. is currently tied for 2nd in the CL in stolen bases (15)... INF/OF Tucker Neuhaus (73) and INF Ronnie Gideon (72) and are both tied for the CL lead in most strikeouts... RHP Marcos Diplan is currently tied fro 2nd in the CL in most walks (34)... RHP Luke Barker is tied for the CL lead in games (19), 3rd in lowest average against (.158) and 2nd in fewest baserunners/9ip ratio (7.76).
STINGY MAY: Carolina pitchers combined to pitch to a Carolina League best 2.65 ERA in May (258.1 IP, 105 BB, 255 SO, .225 AVG). They also went 16-13 in May, while the offense totaled 20 home runs, 4.48 runs/game and a .245 average (.702 OPS).
MUDDIES ON THE POND: Carolina is batting a CL low .236 with runners on base. The Mudcats are also 9th in the CL when batting with runners in scoring position (.247) and 7th when batting with RISP/2-outs (.226) this season. They have additionally struck out a league high 243 times when batting with runners on base.
INTRA-DIV: The Mudcats are currently 19-26 and own a Carolina League Southern Division worst .422 percentage in games against their own division this season. The Mudcats are also 9th in the CL for worst in-division winning percentage (.422).
GOT HEEEM: Max McDowell leads MiLB catchers in most caught steals (32) and is 2nd in caught stealing/stolen base efficiency (.552) for catchers with at least 30 attempts against in all of MiLB... He totaled 18 CS (.450) during his first season with the AZL Brewers in 2015. He then totaled 54 CS (.443) in 2016 with Wisconsin and 31 CS (.556) last season with Carolina.
HITS AND Ks: The Carolina offense has totaled 122 more strikeouts than hits (572 SO, 450 H) so far this season. Carolina's difference in strikeouts over hits is currently the largest in MiLB. Since 1991, only the 2017 and 2007 Mudcats have finished a season with more strikeouts than hits. Carolina totaled 164 more strikeouts than hits in 2017 (1,245 SO [franchise record], 1,081 H) and 70 more strikeouts than hits in 2007 (1,219 SO, 1,149 H).
AWARDS SZN: Keston Hiura was named the Carolina League's Player of the Month for the month of May on June 5 by Minor League Baseball. Hiura was also named the Brewers Minor League Player of the Month for May by Milwaukee on June 4... Carolina has also had three players earn CL Weekly Player/Pitcher of the Week awards this season; Ryan Aguilar - April 16-22, Weston Wilson - April 23-29 and Cam Roegner - May 7-13.
