SEA DOGS TAKE FIRST GAME - Despite trailing 2-0 after the first inning, the Portland Sea Dogs secured the 5-2 victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Diego Rincones blasted a two-run home run off of Jay Groome in the first inning to put Richmond on top, 2-0.The Sea Dogs plated their first run of the game in the fifth inning. After a lead-off single by Hudson Potts, Tyreque Reed and Wil Dalton each drew walks to load the bases. Elih Marrero drew the bases-loaded walk, bringing home Potts and the Sea Dogs were on the board, 2-1. In the top of the eighth inning, David Hamilton drew a lead-off walk then stole second, his 24th stolen base of the year. Hamilton then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ceddanne Rafaela and scored on a passed ball by Richmond's catcher, Ricardo Genoves, and the game was tied, 2-2. Portland secured their victory in the top of the ninth inning. Potts reached on a lead-off walk then moved to third after a double by Reed. Kole Cottam drove home Potts with a single to left field, and the Sea Dogs led, 3-2. Elih Marrero then singled to right field, extending Portland's lead, 4-2. With Cottam at third, Genoves recorded another passed ball and the Sea Dogs led, 5-2.
IMPRESSIVE AND ALSO A FIRST - Last night was the first time this season that the Sea Dogs won a game after trailing after the seventh inning on the road. Until last night, Portland was 0-15 in that scenario.
LET'S TALK ABOUT JUNE - The Sea Dogs are hitting .244 in June with 29 doubles, five triples and 13 home runs. Pedro Castellanos has had the best month so far, hitting .373 with 9 doubles and owning a .918 OPS. Kole Cottam has the second-best batting average this month, hitting .310 with seven RBI. The pitching staff has a 4.35 ERA for the month and are 3-for-6 in save opportunities. Jake Thompson has not allowed an earned run in 8.2 innings while Oddanier Mosqueda has allowed just one in his 7.2 innings in June.
CASTELLANOS NAMED EASTERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - First baseman/ outfielder Pedro Castellanos has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week of June 13-19. Castellanos hit a league-best .429 (12-for-28) in six games during the week with two runs scored, two doubles, a home run, and five RBI. In 58 games this season, Castellanos leads the club in average (.283), hits (65), doubles (16), home runs (8), RBI (42), slugging percentage (.465), OPS (.772), extra-base hits (25), and total bases (107). He has a team-high 15 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI games. Castellanos is the first Sea Dogs player to earn Eastern League Player of the Week honors this season.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - June 22, 2010: Altoona's Rudy Owens who faced Stephen Strasburg in his Double-A debut, hurls seven strong innings on three hits and one run to beat the Sea Dogs 2-1. Portland had just three hits, but one was a homer by Luis Exposito, his second in as many games.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Brian Van Belle will take the mound tonight for the Sea Dogs in his second Double-A start. His first was June 16th at Reading. Van Belle tossed 5.0 innings allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four and did not issue a walk. He retired nine consecutive batters before giving up a lead-off single in the fourth inning.
