DESPITE EARLY LEAD, SEA DOGS FALL TO FIGHTIN PHILS - The Sea Dogs lost to the Fightin Phils last night, 7-2. Portland was first to strike in the third after Nick Sogard singled with one out and David Hamilton followed with a base hit of his own, moving Sogard to third. Hamilton stole second base, and on the throw down, Sogard came in to score and gave the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead. With Hamilton still on second, Castellanos connected for the third single of the inning, driving in Hamilton, increasing Portland's lead to 2-0. Josh Ockimey belted a three-run homer, giving Reading a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning. In the sixth inning, Jack Conley muscled a two-run blast to left field, extending the Fightin Phils lead to 5-2. Two more runs came around to score for the Fightin Phils in the bottom of the seventh inning against Sea Dogs reliever Dylan Spacke. Jonathan Guzman singled, Chris Sharpe walked, and Sal Gozzo was hit by a pitch to load the bases. One out later, Conley delivered with a two-run single, increasing their lead to 7-2. Portland could muster any more offense, falling 7-2 to the Fightin Phils.
BRIAN VAN BELLE'S DOUBLE-A DEBUT - Right-hander Brian Van Belle made his Double-A debut last night for Portland. He tossed 5.0 innings allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four. Van Belle did not issue a walk, but he did allow a home run.
CASTELLANOS CONTINUES TO HIT - Pedro Castellanos extended his hitting streak to 13 games last night and his on-base streak to 18 games after collecting two hits in last night's loss. His hitting streak is the longest, active streak in Double-A. Castellanos has also recorded 15 multi-hit games for the Sea Dogs this year and 11 multi-RBI games this season.
GRANBERG GETS THE CALL - Prior to yesterday's game, outfielder Devlin Granberg has been promoted to Triple-A Worcester. Granberg was one of the best hitters for the Sea Dogs, he is batting .304 in 40 games with 11 doubles, four triples, one home run and 10 RBI. Granberg also had one of the best OBP in the Eastern League with .427. In a corresponding move, infielder Ricardo Cubillan has been sent to Portland from High-A Greenville and outfielder Tyler Esplin rejoins A+ Greenville.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - June 17, 2008: The Sea Dogs used a 6-run second inning to beat Akron 11-2 on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park. Kris Johnson (4-3) hurled six innings on five hits and two runs to earn the win. Iggy Suarez led Portland's 14-hit attack with three hits and two runs scored. Tony Granadillo and Mickey Hall each homered. John Otness knocked in two runs with a triple and a bases-loaded walk. Portland received a hit from all nine starters and an RBI from seven of nine.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Victor Santos takes the mound for the Sea Dogs tonight. Santos has faced the Fightin Phils twice at Hadlock Field and is 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA. In two starts, he has tossed 10.0 innings allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits while walking one and striking out nine. Reading has a .275 batting average against him.
